[Syllable] The free desktop and server operating system family

Kaj 22-Dec-2010 [2314x2] | I tried my cURL binding on Syllable Desktop and it just worked |
As I suspected, I didn't even have to recompile the Linux binary, just as with the core REBOL 3 library
Kaj 31-Jan-2011 [2316x4] | This past Saturday we held our Winter Syllable Conference: |
http://web.syllable.org/2011/WinterSylCon/main.html
Most of the demos had REBOL in them
We introduced and handed out a sneak preview of our new Syllable Desktop live CD, introduced the REBOL 3 cURL binding and went through our planned demonstration of setting up a website provider on Syllable Server, running on Cheyenne, making a website on Desktop with my REBOL CMS, building it with REBOL 3 and uploading it to Server with the cURL binding, with a short demo of the graphical version of Syllable Server thrown in
Maxim 31-Jan-2011 [2320x2] | nice! |
live CD is very interesting.
Kaj 31-Jan-2011 [2322x2] | I'm finishing it off for release in the coming weeks |
Well, just finish, not finish off :-)
Maxim 31-Jan-2011 [2324] | ;-) |
Henrik 31-Jan-2011 [2325] | will the live CD run in VMWare, Parallels or VirtualBox? |
Kaj 31-Jan-2011 [2326x3] | All of them as far as we know, but we can't test them ourselves |
VMware is usually best | |
Or QEmu | |
Henrik 31-Jan-2011 [2329] | Works in VirtualBox |
Kaj 1-Feb-2011 [2330] | You mean the current live CD? That's the very old 0.6.4 one |
Henrik 1-Feb-2011 [2331] | ok :-) well, it worked. |
Kaj 1-Feb-2011 [2332x2] | Thanks for testing, but this one has no REBOL included yet |
I hope to release the new one in a week or two
Maxim 1-Feb-2011 [2334] | I'll be sure to try it on my laptop and give you feedback... :-) |
Kaj 2-Feb-2011 [2335] | Cool |
Andreas 2-Feb-2011 [2336x2] | syllable cvs down? |
ah yes. the aftermath of the attacks on sourceforge, it seems.
Kaj 2-Feb-2011 [2338x2] | Yes, more SF suckage |
We also have source packages of stable releases, though
Kaj 12-Feb-2011 [2340x2] | The web viewer of SF CVS is back |
This also makes the source of the R3 extensions available again
Andreas 19-Mar-2011 [2342] | Pertaining to the previous discussion in "Red": If you do readelf -h `which ls` | grep Type on Syllable, what type do you get? EXEC, DYN, something else? |
Kaj 19-Mar-2011 [2343] | DYN |
Andreas 19-Mar-2011 [2344] | Cool, thanks. |
Kaj 4-Apr-2011 [2345x4] | I've written a build recipe for the Fossil version control system: |
http://syllable.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/syllable/syllable/system/apps/utils/Builder/packages/Fossil--current/
Of course it just works on Syllable Server, because that's Linux, but for Syllable Desktop it turns out to need the newest Syllable development build for advanced facilities
So we can use it as a cross-platform solution
Dockimbel 27-May-2011 [2349] | What is the default root password for Desktop edition? |
Kaj 27-May-2011 [2350] | root |
Dockimbel 27-May-2011 [2351] | Desktop version runs fine on VMware 7.0. |
Kaj 27-May-2011 [2352] | Ah, one more convert :-) |
Dockimbel 27-May-2011 [2353] | :-) |
Kaj 13-Jun-2011 [2354x2] | I've produced a new Syllable Desktop live CD, shipping with REBOL 3 and Boron: |
http://web.syllable.org/pages/get-Syllable.html#Live-CD
Endo 15-Jun-2011 [2356] | @Kaj: I just tried SyllableDesktop-0.6.6-LiveCD.i586 on my Asus Eee PC netbook yesterday. It worked when I select "USB 1 only / Asus Eee PC" after giving lots of "panic" msg during boot. But then it worked great. |
GrahamC 15-Jun-2011 [2357] | Why was it having panic attacks for? |
Endo 15-Jun-2011 [2358] | I don't know, it said "flush_block ... failed" several time (20-30 times may be) I thought that it doesn't work but then desktop appeared and it works fine. |
Kaj 15-Jun-2011 [2359x5] | Nice to hear |
The panics can be ignored. That's not normally the case, but it is because it's running on a CD while it is expecting a writable medium
The parts of the system that count are moved into a RAM disk during start-up
Endo, what's the resolution of your EeePC screen? I'm interested if the default 800x600 resolution works on 800x480 netbooks
By the way, it's on OSNews now:
