Terry 23-Jan-2005 [781] | But the DB uses the filesystem as well? So in essence, you are skipping a step |
Tomc 23-Jan-2005 [782] | the db you are using very likely uses "cooked" storage, but more advanced db use raw disk the filesystem knows nothing od and does not touch |
Terry 23-Jan-2005 [783] | well, I use MySQL.. pretty much standard these days |
Tomc 23-Jan-2005 [784] | I am just starting to use mysql a little bit and it is a great step up from plain old flatfiles it is constantly improving a cinch to administer, but limited for complex relations |
James 23-Jan-2005 [785] | Hey, I found a really neat GUI interface in the Picasa photo organizer program from Google. (http://www.google.com/downloads/) If you download it or already have it, just click the "Timeline" button near the top of the screen. I think it would be really neat if someone could make a REBOL clone of that screen. |
Graham 23-Jan-2005 [786x2] | It's pretty neat - found pictures I didn't know I had. |
Time to delete before the wife sees them!
Alan 23-Jan-2005 [788] | bad Graham ! :) |
Tomc 23-Jan-2005 [789x2] | from the mail list |
Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2005 17:03:16 +0100 From: Bryan Rasmussen <[bry-:-itnisk-:-com]> Reply-To: [rebolist-:-rebol-:-com] To: [rebolist-:-rebol-:-com] Subject: [REBOL] Intro to Rebol article for DevX Hi, i've been asked to write an intro to rebol article for devX, a task for which there are any number of people better suited and for which i wouldn't have the time anyway. So if anyone is interested in writing this i can direct the devx editors to you as i still follow this list well enough to know who knows, even if i hardly ever use the language anymore. -- Bryan Rasmussen
Graham 24-Jan-2005 [791] | just reading Paul Graham's lastest essay : http://www.paulgraham.com/hs.html and liking this little bit Now I know a number of people who do great work, and it's the same with all of them. They have little discipline. They're all terrible procrastinators and find it almost impossible to make themselves do anything they're not interested in. One still hasn't sent out his half of the thank-you notes from his wedding, four years ago. Another has 26,000 emails in her inbox. |
yeksoon 24-Jan-2005 [792] | From the article, -- The great mathematician G. H. Hardy said he didn't like math in high school either. He only took it up because he was better at it than the other students. -- Isn't Carl the same? He took up computing for the same reasons. |
Graham 24-Jan-2005 [793] | I quoted the part above as I too have not managed to get my thank-you notes out ... but by a somewhat greater period of time :( |
yeksoon 24-Jan-2005 [794] | don't sweat the small stuffs . :) |
Graham 24-Jan-2005 [795] | everytime my inbox slows down on account of the number of email inside, I just create a new inbox :) |
Tomc 24-Jan-2005 [796] | just had my yonger son read that essay this weekend |
Pekr 24-Jan-2005 [797] | Hey, is here anyone from Netherlands? :-) I love two bands from there - The Gathering (Anneke van Giersbergen) and Within Temptation (Sharon den Adel) and there is possibility I would visit this year's only The Gathering performance for DVD purposes seated show in Amsterodam ... man, am I really so crazy that musim means so much for me? :-) |
Maarten 24-Jan-2005 [798] | I actually live in Amsterdam! |
Pekr 24-Jan-2005 [799x3] | ha! :-) |
I will talk to one or two friends and we have to fast enough decide, if we go or not ....
how much are hottels in average there?
Maarten 24-Jan-2005 [802x2] | Depends on your hotel, but I don't know so I can't tell. Will ask my wife, she was born here. |
I think a youth hostel is cheapest. But you can check on the net easily, I'd say. My place (with three little kids) is too crowded, otherwise you could stay here.
Gregg 24-Jan-2005 [804] | You're supposed to send out Thank You notes? Would it be bad to do it after 16 years? Hmmm, I bet my wife did it right away. |
Graham 24-Jan-2005 [805x2] | I know my wife didn't do it .. and mine is more than 16 years ... |
I guess I could say that they were delayed by ecartis ?
Terry 24-Jan-2005 [807x3] | Countdown to global catastrophe Climate change: report warns point of no return may be reached in 10 years, leading to droughts, agricultural failure and water shortages http://news.independent.co.uk/world/environment/story.jsp?story=603975 |
In total, the core of our team has invested something like 80 man years on this experiment, 18 of which are mine. I think right now the key lesson is this -- if you're looking for a job with instant and guaranteed success, this isn't it. -- University of Idaho professor David Atkinson, whose years of work on an experiment to measure the winds on Saturn's moon Titan came to naught because someone forgot to turn it on
What's the difference between God and Larry Ellison? God doesn't think he's Larry Ellison.
Pekr 24-Jan-2005 [810] | Now who was that stating few months ago that not adhering to Kyoto protocol is not important, as such things has no impact on Earth conditions ... |
Alan 24-Jan-2005 [811] | our beloved "President" ? |
Geomol 25-Jan-2005 [812] | I think, we have too many groups in REBOL3. I start to have problems figuring out, where I should post. Can we clean up? |
Terry 25-Jan-2005 [813] | I'm sorry, but that last post should be in the Chat group. |
Geomol 25-Jan-2005 [814] | LOL |
Allen 25-Jan-2005 [815] | The groups seem to be well classified if you use the world group dividers, better than previous. |
Maxim 25-Jan-2005 [816] | how can we self remove ourself from a private group? it always says "you must be included in the group" ??? |
Graham 25-Jan-2005 [817x3] | several ways to do this ... |
I can only remember one though ..
get someone else to remove you. or log on as guest and do the deed.
Maxim 25-Jan-2005 [820] | so an evil person would remove guest from all private groups ;-) |
Graham 25-Jan-2005 [821] | you could add guest back in again. |
Maxim 25-Jan-2005 [822x2] | right, since your in the group, in the first place... but that leaves guest on the list after and is not very nice for truely private groups... such a thing can go unnoticed by the group's "manager" |
I wish there where moderator features in altme... so we could generate a moderated group and then you are master of that specific group... including removing posts.
Graham 25-Jan-2005 [824] | log on twice with altme and take each other out |
Maxim 25-Jan-2005 [825x2] | and adding other moderators... |
graham... that is very wise... your patients must not complain often. You have a very good sense of observation.
Graham 25-Jan-2005 [827] | last man standing is it. |
eFishAnt 25-Jan-2005 [828] | dead guest chatting... |
Chris 25-Jan-2005 [829] | Right-click on your own name and you can deselect the private groups you are in... |
Maxim 25-Jan-2005 [830] | ahhhh that's it :-) |
