JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [199x2] | We use the same code to configure the unit. To generate the admin tools. To design the networks. And all uses the same code base. Everything runs of different OS. |
Graham. 100% yes. | |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [201] | I have friend here in CZ, who did very GOOD AP, where you can use card of any arbitrary chipset producer (Atheros, others). He uses IP2K CPU from Ubicom. The same one we use for our projects. But he has a bit difficulcy to sell here. It is much better but also more expensive than e.g. Ovislink. |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [202] | ok, let me know when these units are available :) |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [203] | btw - he has also traffic shaping ... |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [204] | Well I have issues with UBICOM. Our AP does a lot more that just route the pkts. We can provide a lot functionalty because we had a real processor. |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [205] | what real processor? |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [206x3] | 586 |
Or PPC | |
The ubicom is cool as it lets you create pci interfaces by flipping pins. But then you are restricted in the OS, and you need to use Ubicoms intellectual property and tools. I use openbsd.
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [209x3] | Although it is in Czech, there are screenshots for you to see what can be configured - http://www.mikrovlny.cz/prilohy/GIOMEX.pdf |
What you call proprietary toos I call pretty advanced SDK you get with demoboard :-)
he uses the "Rebol" way - not typically a webserver to configure, but externall app (currently for linux and Win)
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [212x2] | Same here. |
What does your friend use to produce the external tools? GTK?
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [214x2] | btw - we were looking for ideal router, proxy, traffic shaper, wireless, etc. kind of system, first we played with BSD based m0n0wall, then we found what we regard nearly ideal, although not necessarily free, but way cheaper than SmoothWall etc. Have you ever heard of Mikrotik.com? Guy from Latvia IIRC, very clever design, go and study a bit, maybe you will find some good things in there. What is cool with their system is scripting language for dynamic creation of some rules/configuration on the fly ... they use externall app too, which is downloaded to your machine from router though ... |
I thought that Rebol inside your system could do something similar, e.g. introduce some kind of dialect or hooks to system, so you would be able to act upon packet content etc., but dunno if rebol would be fast enough here ....
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [216] | Yes. Our systems is similar to Mikrotik. |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [217] | jaime for linux GUI you get a lot of possibilities rebol.view, WX, GTK+; QT, X11, TK |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [218] | Pekr. I think you will find our configuration tools really cool. I will be releasing some updates to the website in a next month. So keep your eyes open. |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [219x2] | ok, can I find more on your website? |
ah, should read your reply first ...
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [221x2] | I find rebol, very close to write once release everywere. If we had OSX here today. It will be perfect. |
I had my tools available in OpenBSD, Win, Linux, and FreeBSD.
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [223x3] | well, I think very important can be that rebol server part - If you would be able to create scripting language (which looks simplicity-wise very similar to rebol on mikrotik) for such purposes using dialect for e.g., it would open your device to configure whatever. |
and PC part? You could be ok with core on osx too and textual console, like in old DOS days or Linux install screens ...
Mikrotik scripting examples - http://www.mikrotik.com/docs/ros/2.8/appex/scripting1.content
Bo 4-Mar-2005 [226] | That sounds good to me. I'd like to have the ability to control the packets coming through Jaime's Rasta device. |
Tomc 4-Mar-2005 [227] | graham you could put the rasta midway between your house and your dads house to minimize range to both |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [228] | what is RASTA in english? Does it mean anything? :-) |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [229x3] | It means "The Way" in hurdu |
Kind of when you ask which way I find the drug store and they tell you go here and there.
So for me it is close to what a router does. It tell the packets which way to go. And the the kernel put them in the right street, I mean interface.
Bo 4-Mar-2005 [232] | Jaime, I sent you a private question regarding your quote. |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [233x2] | Replied. |
BTW. Pekr we have some graphical tools that let you construct this type of instructions very easily. My objective has been that anyone should be able to manage a unit. But I am getting ahead the game here this is coming in our next releases. I think is going to blow the eyes of some of our competitors.
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [235] | Tomc, I'm not sure how that would work ... apart from sticking it on to a public utility lampost ... I wouldn't be able to get a wire to it. Or, perhaps I could use power other ethernet and just get a very long ethernet cable :) |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [236] | Graham is your goal 50km or 50m? |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [237x2] | 100 m .. |
.1 km | |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [239] | one bad point for rebol visibility is that the fact you use REBOL into RASTA is not specified |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [240] | secret weapon ... |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [241] | on the web site I mean |
BrianW 4-Mar-2005 [242] | He doesn't need to specify it there, but we can point it out on another site. assuming you're okay with that jaime |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [243] | saying you use REBOL will not explain how you use it and how you manage to use it .. it would show that REBOL is a viable solution for this kind of applications |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [244x2] | Graham 100m is a very easy link for us to do. You don't need any special equipment. One of the cards that I mention will suffice. |
Only thing you need is a Rasta in your roof. But I must say that it depends on the terrain and if there are too many obstacles.
BrianW 4-Mar-2005 [246] | heh. That's an amusing image. |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [247] | but maybe graham wan to rentabilise his cable link by sharing it with lot of people |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [248] | I've got line of sight to my dad's house |
