Volker 7-Dec-2005 [772x2] | Pekr: "I don't mean action as looking into source, etc., that is a good part .... but simply prerequisite is to have installed View anyway, then download your .exe, put it somewhere, link to it etc." |
I think this things can be made more automatic. My idea is integrating this launch-way into rebol. Mainly beeing able to launch index.r, and working in the right folder.
Henrik 15-Dec-2005 [774x2] | carl, is Rebcode allowed? |
hmm... wouldn't this be a neat marketing thing? If the iPod thing is serious, it could be posted on larger newssites, or is that inappropriate?
Izkata 15-Dec-2005 [776] | The iPod would certainly get students' attention. But the Imagination and Cyphre demos posted there might throw them off.. |
[unknown: 9] 15-Dec-2005 [777] | Carl wrote: Q: "So, what should be the rules? " A: Let's lock these down as fast as possible. It would be great to post this in 2005. Q: "Perhaps a limit on the size of the script." A: I would like to suggest it has to be a free standing script (not a script that grabs other scripts, or other media. Given AGG, I would like to suggest 32K (32,768 bytes) total. It can be in multiple files, but the combined total must not exceed this. Compatible with Rebol View 1.3. Q: "It needs to be fast to download. We can setup a demo upload/download area on the View desktop." A: I suggest not doing this, but rather put this on a public website. We are trying to invite new developers, the less steps the better. A copy can be on the view Desktop though. Q: "So, what deadline date? Early January? Before students return to school." A: I vote the contest ends Dec 31st 11:59.59 (this should be 11:59.60 but Rebol has a bug representing leap seconds, which happens this year). Q: Who should judge the winner? Vote of the REBOL community or RT worldwide staff? A: I think the people giving the prizes should not do the voting. I can suggest using someone more famous, I can get one of my friends like Charles Fleischer the comedian to vote, or better David Brin (author of Earth, the postman, Transparent Society), they would both enjoy doing the voting I suspect. Lastly, I would like to offer the following: Prolific will put up a brand new Xbox 360 (when available). Instead of having a first and second place, rather, both can pick which prize they want. So the award wording would be "Win your choice of an Apple iPod video, or a Microsoft Xbox 360. Awarded to the first and second place winners." Third place should be a choice between SDK license, or Command (and in fact, the first and second place winners could chose these as well). |
Geomol 15-Dec-2005 [778] | :-) |
Rebolek 15-Dec-2005 [779] | Iztaka: "Cyphre" demo is only 2kB so you cannot expect miracles. In more space is posible to do more things and 32kB is really HUGE script. http://krutek.info/rebol/demonica-player.r |
[unknown: 9] 15-Dec-2005 [780] | Huge script (but remember, it has to include all media) |
Rebolek 15-Dec-2005 [781] | but can it be compressed with COMPRESS ? |
[unknown: 9] 15-Dec-2005 [782x2] | Sure. I would not respect anyone that did not! |
(My actual specialty happens to be compression technologies)
Carl 15-Dec-2005 [784x3] | Good suggestions. Nice color too. |
All sounds good, with exception of the XBox prize. I heard "things" about the company that makes it. ;)
I could suggest a MacMini (but then the winner also gets to finish porting REBOL to it).
[unknown: 9] 15-Dec-2005 [787] | LOL |
BrianH 15-Dec-2005 [788] | No problem :) |
Izkata 15-Dec-2005 [789] | Kru - I was referring to how complex they look while running, not the size (or actual complexity) of the code ^_^ |
Allen 15-Dec-2005 [790] | A few rebol promo items like t-shirts should be in the mix too. |
[unknown: 9] 15-Dec-2005 [791x2] | Agreed. |
I have original Rebol flags (desktop size). I will throw one in to the 4rth and 5th place winners. : )
Volker 16-Dec-2005 [793x5] | If its a mac mini i learn graphics.. |
I would use seperate sizes for media and script. script maybe 8k? its a demo, and a month. media should be more. because one feature is, take a photo and do crazy things with it. a photo in 32k is not much. a script of 32k takes some month work (its a demo, so it should be "this does in 32k what others do in 32k*8, and that kind of compression takes time)
How about not only graphics demos, but networking too? Once there was a contest for a mud (text-moorg) in 16k, and some entries where playable and interesting they said.
And there should be multiple levels, best guru, best beginner, so students have more hope. (and i am a graphics-beginner, so - Ha! ;)
how about word-length? if size is limited, demos become: insert d a: b + c. a low limit, medium length 3-5 chars?
BrianH 16-Dec-2005 [798] | Compress should deal with word length. |
Volker 16-Dec-2005 [799x2] | good point. |
How about an old good amiga too? Or this newer one, (genesis?)
[unknown: 9] 16-Dec-2005 [801] | I vote keep it simple, and based on the feedback of this one, we step it up a notch next year, which can be the day after if we get our asses in gear and post this ASAP! LOL |
Volker 16-Dec-2005 [802] | Gel is 1346 bytes and the images 25k |
Rebolek 16-Dec-2005 [803] | I think 32kB all together is good. Remember that some Amiga demos were only 4kB with sound and graphics! |
Volker 16-Dec-2005 [804] | if i trade 8 k in resolution for 8k in script-size i double my script-size. i do not like that. |
Rebolek 16-Dec-2005 [805] | If I remember correctly, demo categories were 4k, 64k and mega-demo (unlimited size). Maybe for next demo contest we can have these categories but this year I prefer to stick with 32k. I wonder if rebcode can be used or not. Although I love rebcode, it's still only in alpha, so it seems to be more fair when rebcode is not allowed. |
Cyphre 16-Dec-2005 [806] | Not sure If anyone mentioned it. THe demoshould run on View 1.3.2 so NO rebcode...(this is confirmed by Carl) |
Rebolek 16-Dec-2005 [807] | OK, so 1) Is there a web site set up for the RDC yet? 2) The deadline is 31-12/11:59:59. Is it GMT? 3) I hope that 32kB limitaion is final. Is that true? 3) Will the submited demos be available publicly before deadline? (I vote no). Hm, I've got only 14 days left. I should better hurry up ;) |
yeksoon 16-Dec-2005 [808] | I think that is the beauty of this challenge. How little time (and code) allows u to create something wonderful.. |
[unknown: 9] 16-Dec-2005 [809] | Deadline should be GMT = 0! As in England. I agree demos can't be seen before deadline, but we can post past demos. I'm going to try to work with Carl to buld a clear page (on Rebol.com I hope). |
Allen 16-Dec-2005 [810] | I liked idea of a an ongoing weekly comp.. like back in 1999 http://web.archive.org/web/19991013041056/rebol.com/contest.html . Haven't found the how to enter page though. |
Josh 16-Dec-2005 [811] | Agreed, Allen |
Graham 16-Dec-2005 [812x6] | I think there are better things we can do with our time. |
Gregg's response to the OSX widgets thread on the maling list suggests another possibility.
If RT were to create a dashboard, the community could create the widgets for this .. either as a weekly or monthly competition.
we would have to have some security guides as to what we can do, and for safetely RT could host the accepted widgets.
This would be a much more useful activity that demos that only provide eye candy.
Achieve both aims in one go.
Rebolek 16-Dec-2005 [818] | I think RDC should be announced on ML as well. But by someone more official than me :) |
Graham 16-Dec-2005 [819x2] | In essence the dashboard could be a custom version of the Rebol Desktop. |
It sounds very much to me, or hasn't used Konfabulator etc, that is what it is anyway.
PhilB 16-Dec-2005 [821] | There is typo on the Rebol License page (mentioned is one of Carl's blogs ....) .... under the section for Rebol IOS , the text says Rebol/SDK is not free, rather that Rebol/IOS is not free.. |
