[!AltME] Discussion about AltME

We may have to bring back the Guest account. I remember being able
to sync by changing to Guest and back to my original account.
Or some type of account that we can switch back and forth to, maybe
a read only account.

Good point.

Thør, so you installed AltME, and you changed something about how
it runs?

I didn't actually install AltME. After downloading it and double
clicking it, instead of selecting the "Typical" option, I chose the
other option, the option where it says "Run AltME from Current Location,"
or something like that.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Ok, will you try doing a full install, lets see if this simple thing
is the problem.
I don't think we ever do that LOL, we always install.

ok. will try it.
But how do i uninstall it? It doesn't show up in the add/remove programs,
and when I run the downloaded program, it automatically connects
to REBOL3?

Since you are running it in place, I assume you have a copy on your
desktop.
Thør

[1322]
It's in another folder. Could I just rename/delete the mods & prefs
folders?

Thor, I don't think it's difficult to uninstall. Just look in the
filesystem where the altme.exe is, and see if there are any files
there. You could just delete those (or move them away somewhere
safe). I just looked in the registry and found the -u switch for
uninstallation, so altme.exe -u is the command line.

OK., will try that. Thanks. :D

(but I don't think that's necessary since you didn't actually fully
install it.)
Yeah, so probably better just to move the altme files that you have
somewhere safe, then run altme.exe again and do a full install.
(copy altme.exe to a fresh new folder first.)
Finding altme in the registry is also quite simple (if it is there).
Just run regedit and search for "altme". You quickly find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SafeWorlds\AltME
and within that the home directory where altme was installed.

OK, I'm back :D, but this is the only group that has anything in
it. And I just posted to the dot group, in the hopes that it will
sync most, if not all the groups...

So you did a full install ?

Yes.

Anything ?

The Puzzles group has resynced. The others not yet.

Hmm, I think this might mean the altme server keeps a record of which
groups you have synced and which not. So it probably thinks you have
the same installation (coming from the same machine).
I think you'll see other groups sync when new posts are made to them.
Try quit and restart.

I just Quit and restarted. No new syncs. I noticed that the groups
do get synced once a new post is made. That's why all I was posting
were dots a few days ago. Will try and copy the downloaded group
files to the new AltME location...
.
Reichart, I get disconnected while syncing in the groups where there
are a lot of posts (Core & View, to name a couple). Is there a workaround
for this? A setting to change, perhaps?

We could really use the "Reset" button right about now. You know
the one that clears the new messages as read and therefore not "red."

I am a little tired of AltME having no history, aside from that you
have accumulated yourself. Even your local history gets pushed off
by newer messages. This is supposed to be a community, not Las Vegas.

[1342]
You have full history, you just have to change how far back you want
to see. Or did I not understand your statement?
BrianH

[1343]
If my history is set to 100 and I change it to 1000, do I get to
see the other 900 messages?
[unknown: 9]

[1344]
Yup

Reichart, heavy net load to your server coming up! ;-) (When all
user set history to a googolplex.
[unknown: 9]

[1346]
Actually, that only affects your local computer.
Geomol

[1347]
ok ... how is that?
BrianH
4-Apr-2006
[1348]
Well that's better then. What if I sign up to AltME and log onto
a group that I never have seen before, does it download the historical
messages? What if I haven't signed in for a year and there are 100,000+
messages in the group since then, does AltME download them?
Geomol

Don't it have to get the messages from your server?
Doesn't
BrianH

[1351]
I don't have an AltME server, just the client.

[1352]
Do we really have the full sets locally at all time?

Altme *always* downloads everything (except for the dot bug, that
is)
the message setting just says how many messages are *displayed*
if you don't believe me, try resyncing this world from scratch -
it'll take a very long time :)

Interesting ... I had all groups set to read (so not red ;-)

Now with Thors dotting some groups turn up with unread messages from
15-oct-2005 (that was in Rebol Enhancements).

Makes me wonder how many groups have not been properly synchronized
without me noticing.

Here is a trick in syncing. There is a chat folder that has all the
chat messages for each group are kept. Inside that folder is a file
called chat55. If you delete a line entry from that file, the group
that corresponds with that line will be resycnc like it was never
been there before.
Warning! Do the above trick on your own risk.

Edgar -- I cam think of two drawbacks to that suggested forced resyn
method:

1. the files themselves contain the request: " DO NOT MODIFY!" in
their header, so perhaps Altme can forsee bad consequences if we
do

2. the resync problem appears to mainly affect those on dial up connections.
Possibly, that means the issue is related to Altme timing out a slow
request. So there is the likelihood that resyncing a large group
completely will simply fail midway.
I did try a variant of your suggestion: I renamed one of the *.set
files to *.txt (the request does not say "DO NOT DELETE OR RENAME!")
It didn't work.
I ended up with an empry group.

I supposed I shoudl have dotted it to see if it'd've resynced.....But
that was the problem we're trying to solve :-)

It's pretty hard to solve a problem when you lack the source.

From Reichart's comments, it sounds hard to solve even with the source
:-)
