[!AltME] Discussion about AltME

Sunanda 1-May-2007 [2412] | Got it! |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2413] | I'm sure someone has mentioned this but can you autostart a world after a reboot? I don't mean autoreturning to a world via the -w arg. |
Maxim 2-May-2007 [2414] | do a search in this world... its been covered before... or just browse up a bit... you're bound to find it. |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2415] | Thanks. |
Brock 2-May-2007 [2416] | James, I use windows so I would put the shortcut in my startup folder, with the appropriate parameters to auto-start. I know I put my solution in earlier, I'll try and find the date for you to save you from looking. |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2417] | Thanks. Brock. I did look but couldn't find it. |
Brock 2-May-2007 [2418] | May 11, 2006 |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2419] | thx |
Brock 2-May-2007 [2420] | search words: world shortcut user: brock |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2421] | Brock, how does it handle the password portion? |
Brock 2-May-2007 [2422] | I believe it's assumed since it's running on the 'server' and being accessed by the script, that the password is not required. I think it's only when starting a world from the client that you are asked for the password. |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2423] | Ah, well if it works. Thanks so much. |
james_nak 8-May-2007 [2424x3] | Listen, I have a question. How do I know which port it is using? C:\Program Files\AltMe\altme.exe" -s "<Worldname>" -p <portnumber> |
Maybe just use one of the open ones? 5400-5409
Hey, it works! Thanks. I got to thinking that maybe I should try to just try to start it from the CMD and presto! Thanks!
Brock 8-May-2007 [2427x2] | from the Safeworlds site there is a way to identify what port the world connected to... AltME Tools > Check Your World... then type your world name ie, Rebol3, and it will tell you what port you connected through. Typically the first world connected will get 5400 and then each one after will increment the port number. |
Glad you found a way to get it to work.
TimW 20-May-2007 [2429] | Is there a way to sync the groups? Several of the groups here show up as having no messages. I thought they were empty until I added a message to one and then it downloaded the past messages. Is there a way to force it to grab the messages for the other groups? |
Anton 20-May-2007 [2430x2] | There is a "dot" group. What you do is go there and type something, traditionally a ".", and that works for some people. |
I noticed this effect sometimes. Sending a message seems to "unblock the pipe".
Sunanda 20-May-2007 [2432] | Also worth trying: type a message to yourself. What used to work is logging on as guest and then relogging on as yourself. This world has no guest account so that won't work here; but it may work in other worlds. |
TimW 20-May-2007 [2433] | are the conversations cached anywhere online like the mailing list? |
Sunanda 20-May-2007 [2434] | The last 300 messages of the groups whose names contain the tag [web-public] *were* being published on REBOL.net. Sadly, that has not been available since the Great Server Crash of Mar-2007....I have no information on whether than service will be restored The Library Team is toying with the idea of putting a fully searchable archive up on REBOL.org -- that's all 62,000 [web-public] posts. But that is at least a season away. |
Rod 23-May-2007 [2435] | New AltME user question and test - how long before a post should appear? And for that matter perhaps I need to find the FAQ section... |
btiffin 23-May-2007 [2436] | Altme has a lingering re-sync problem. Posts usually appear within seconds. Some seem to disappear into a Sync Check black hole. Watch the status line at the top left of the screen. On by Linux beta, sync checks occur every five seconds or so. |
Rod 23-May-2007 [2437] | Thanks Brian, this group message appeared quickly but the one I sent to !REBOL3 has not appeared yet. Any rules about who can post into what groups? |
btiffin 23-May-2007 [2438] | There are private and public groups. But I've never delved into the rules. There is a WorldMaster that can add and remove privs. I'll leave the real answer to someone who has "mastered" a world. I haven't. |
Rod 23-May-2007 [2439] | I'll check with Gregg if I continue to have problems with it - this seems to work great so my setup is okay at least. |
btiffin 23-May-2007 [2440] | Welcome to Altme REBOL3. It's a pretty cool place. |
Rod 23-May-2007 [2441] | Thanks, glad to be able to join - lost my view of REBOL when I switched to a Mac many years ago - so happy they have a working version for OS X now, beta or not. :-) |
btiffin 23-May-2007 [2442] | Ashley's RebGUI docs include a nice little snippet on OS X app bundles, just FYI. |
Rod 23-May-2007 [2443] | I have looked at Ashley's RebGUI work already, very nice. Need to bring my basic REBOL up to speed though to start using it. I did note the bundles part already as well, very helpful. |
Ashley 23-May-2007 [2444] | Thanks, it helps that I've moved over to Mac within the last two years myself. The last stumbling block was a Mac version of AltME (which I've created an app bundle for ... works like a native app now). |
Rod 23-May-2007 [2445] | Ah, I need to try the bundle steps for AltME. I'm still launching from a terminal session, though I do have one open typically anyway. |
Ashley 23-May-2007 [2446] | The hardest part was creating a nice .icns file ;) (the images that is, not the process) |
Rod 23-May-2007 [2447] | Hah, yeah I am going to be grabbing an .icns that someone with talent did for that part. |
Tomc 24-May-2007 [2448] | Ashley is there a reason safeworlds dosen't/can't use your app bundle as its offical apple download? |
Ashley 24-May-2007 [2449] | They can certainly use the template as a starting point, but need to add their own copyright and other information ... plus add icons that are a bit more polished for the Mac (a bit of shadow on the existing icon and one drawn at 128x128 should do the trick). I should also point out that "my" app bundle merely builds on the work that Gabriele and others have done ... I just put it together in a usable format and published first, ;) |
Sunanda 24-May-2007 [2450] | << Any rules about who can post into what groups?>> If you can see a group in the groups list, then you can post into it. If your posts are not appearing then either: * it has been lost -- if you have a flakey connection, Altme will try to upload the message from your machine and if it discovers it needs to reconnect, it will do so automatically and then THROW YOUR MESSAGE AWAY. All you see is the "reconnecting" message. You are not told your message has been discarded. * it has been recieved, but is not rebroadcast to everyone. Some people see it withing seconds, some do not unless they later post inot the same group This is the resync problem refered to above. |
Sunanda 31-May-2007 [2451] | Can you help, please? I'm trying to establish if we all have the same Altme Group number for the same Altme Groups. If we do, then an app I want to build using merged data from several Altme users will be very easy. If we don't, then I must salute Altme's excellent security measure in making the group number local to each user. But I have to do so while walking back to the drawingboard to redesign the application. So, please: could a few people right-click !Atme in the Groups list and tell me what #nnn they see to the right of the Group Name? Thanks! I see #151 |
DaveC 31-May-2007 [2452] | I get #151 too. |
Maxim 31-May-2007 [2453] | #151 |
ChristianE 31-May-2007 [2454] | #151 |
Henrik 31-May-2007 [2455] | #151 |
Sunanda 31-May-2007 [2456] | Looking promising. Thanks guys! Anyone see anything different? |
eFishAnt 31-May-2007 [2457] | #151 |
Volker 31-May-2007 [2458x2] | #151 |
I salute Altme for simplicity ;)
DideC 31-May-2007 [2460] | n°151 |
Sunanda 31-May-2007 [2461] | Thanks all, again. Simple has advantages.....And that is a big advantage for me right now. But, with my Security hat on: the gaps in the Group-id numbers I see in the users.set file enable me to infer the existence of ex- or private groups. If I'd copied users.set daily, the skips in numbers would leak some additional information. Maybe not enough to launch some sort of attack, but more info than need be leaked. |
