[!AltME] Discussion about AltME

Has anybody done some stress test of an AltME server concerning large
files?
I'm interested to see how it scales.

A big bug with Altme is that someone else has to opt you out of a
public channel
You can't do it yourself.

Perhaps it would be simpler to allow channels to be invisible in
the sidebar. This could be turned on or off in group information.
Then there should be an option in the Divider options (bad name for
this option, btw.) to display all or just visible groups.
Then you wouldn't accidentally opt yourself out of a group and not
be able to get back in again.

thankyou for the opt out graham :)

And an opposite problem exists.

Anyone new joining has no way to even know what private groups exist,
so they have no way of telling if they should request membership.

So if a group has been made private simply so a few current members
can opt out of it (it has happened) that has the side-effect of hiding
the group from all future members.

ICarii will take this information so he can build a better GUI :)

Sunanda, then there should probably be an option to show or hide
private groups. I see the advantage for a private world owner to
have several private groups he shares with different users. They
then can't see eachother's groups, perhaps for business reasons.
I used this once to talk to several different customers in the same
world (until they appearently grew tired of AltME, sigh).

Henrik -- I agree. The current method is not flexible enough to handle
all the common cases.

I think I figured out a problem with my registry.set file. It goes
read-only sometimes after an AltME crash, which makes AltME impossible
to start. I wonder what causes that. (I think there are multiple
different causes why AltME suddenly won't start).

I've been using Emacs for several months now, and like it alot. I
wish I would have switched to Emacs years ago. There is one problem,
however. Without even thinking about it I hit Cnt-x Cnt-s to save.
That deletes the message I've been preparing to send in AltME. But
I just realized I can hit Cnt-v and get it all back.

Louis, we had a discussion about Ctrl-X clearing the field a while
back for VID3. So far I managed to keep it out and I hope it stays
out. :-) Not good usability, IMHO.

Control C & V being so close to each other is also a problem me thinks

I think the answer to shortcuts is that it should NOT be part of
the application, but rather the OS. That the App should offer a
"suggestion" list to the App/
Thus, you can bring up a standard program on the OS, and simply say
AltME/input field "Cut" = Control + X
If apps passed this up to OSes, then a person can bring thier shortcuts
to any computer, or any computer connected to the web.

There could be also a way how to redefine shortcuts as it's for example
in Total Commander.

I wonder when the password bug will be fixed in Altme:/
Graham

the default fix is to use the same password for each account.
This looks like a bug. Select a world which is offline .. eg. r2-beta,
and after it can't connect, click on "return to world". It quits
instead.

I need to get ALTME working behind a firewall - what ports do I need
to allow traffic thru?

Is the FAQ accurate on the issue of firewalls?

Yeah I got it running. Thanks Sunanda.
Anyone got ATLME so that it is automated to start when Windows starts?
Henrik

can't that be done by putting it in the Startup folder in the start
menu?

Would the credentials have to entered for the world?
Henrik

[3015]
you can autologin into the last world that was used
[unknown: 5]

[3016x5]
True - that should work.
Also, if I get this going maybe I can host worlds for others for
less money than ALTME.com charges.
Have to look at their licensing to see if that infringes.
I would suppose that it would be in the interest of ALTME for others
to offer hosting services since the ultimately benefit.
Anyone know a way around the file size limitation in ALTME? i tried
to upload a large file and got a message that there was a limitation
in this version of ALTME.

There is a prototype AltME version on r3-alpha world, which allows
larger uploads ...

Can I get a link to it as I don't think I have access to R3-alpha
world.

I believe the file size is configurable by the world owner isn't
it?

I haven't seen any setting where I can change the size.

Something really weird happened to my AltMe instalations.

Rebol3 and R3-Alpha opened as if it was the first time. It is downloading
every messages again. Does anybody know what could cause this?

Is your hard drive okay?

Hard drive is fine.
OS is XP.
R2-beta world did not do the reload all.

Starting from shortcuts? Or has anything changed that could point
them to a new working dir?

Starting from shortcuts. No new changes.

If you go to files and browse to upload, is the base dir the same
as it always has been?
I think I've seen this, but can't remember the details.
The upside is that the way AltMe works, the only thing you lose is
a little bandwidth for a while. :-)
Also, there was an outage that may have caused something odd if you
were on. I don't know any internals, but some state could have been
mucked up with the lookup server being down I suppose.
Nothing strange here though.
