[!AltME] Discussion about AltME
older newer | first last |
amacleod 10-Oct-2009 [3877x3] | This is the first time I lost my world and one has been running no problem for over a year... |
I re-started/registered and its back up again...I was afraid the old files might get overwritten or some other screw-up but no probs
It seems even the port used has remained the same...
Brock 10-Oct-2009 [3880] | Yes, the port used is reused when you start up again. Whic is why if you run more than one world you restart them in the sequence they were created. So you would have the world on 5400 started first, then while that world is running, restart the world running on 5401, and while that is also running, restart the world running on 5402. (I'm hoping I got the port numbers correct, too lazy to look it up) |
Pekr 11-Oct-2009 [3881] | It was not enough in my case. Even if I have my first world running = 5400 port occupied, when I started another one on 5401, altme.com registered the second one on 5400 too. The trick is to prevent altme.com to get access to your 5400 port (first world) for a while, by disabling DST NAT on your router for a while. At least it was my case. |
amacleod 11-Oct-2009 [3882] | well I restarted two worlds and I do not think I started them in the same order but all seems fine...might have just got lucky.. |
Graham 16-Oct-2009 [3883] | this world back up again now ... everyone happy with these continued outages? |
Maxim 16-Oct-2009 [3884x2] | I don't understand why it keeps falling... |
in any case the server its hosted on, should just scan the process list and restart it automatically when it falls... maybe its a network issue... which makes the service unreachable.
Graham 16-Oct-2009 [3886x2] | It's a server issue ... |
the other hosted altme worlds were done as well ( r3-alpha )
Pekr 17-Oct-2009 [3888] | http://www.rebol.com/article/0433.html |
Maxim 17-Oct-2009 [3889] | how can someone get an account here if they aren't on the mailing list? |
Graham 17-Oct-2009 [3890] | ask ... on rebol.org |
Sunanda 17-Oct-2009 [3891] | Or post a request on their behalf into the Accounts group. We need their name, and email address (to send the join message to them) |
Maxim 17-Oct-2009 [3892x2] | is there a non member form which people can use on rebol.org to get access here? |
its not for a specific person... but if I add support information for remark and provide altme as a resource... I want them to be able to get a user without being a reboler.
Sunanda 17-Oct-2009 [3894] | No....because that form would have to ask for an email address, then we'd have to verify it wasn't just a drive by spamming, etc....Too much hassle at our end. |
Maxim 17-Oct-2009 [3895] | ok, I'll probably build a form on my site for them to request an altme user/password. with email verification of course. |
Sunanda 17-Oct-2009 [3896] | Sounds good! |
Maxim 17-Oct-2009 [3897] | I'll make that my first remark v2 form project :-) and I'll allow you to link to it from rebol.org if you want :-) |
amacleod 22-Oct-2009 [3898] | Lost my worlds again...how often does this occur. I went months without seeing/knowing of this problem and now its twice in about two weeks... |
Brock 22-Oct-2009 [3899] | When I was running multlple worlds it seemed like every month or two it would occur. Then I shut down my seldomly used worlds and the I didn't get the problem for many months, and have only had it happen once or twice in the last year to year and a half. |
Sunanda 22-Oct-2009 [3900] | amacleod -- it looks like AltME.com's world server went down for a time yesterday. Could that have knocked your worlds out of orbit? |
amacleod 22-Oct-2009 [3901] | Does paying the register fee (to protect the world name) make a difference? |
Pekr 23-Oct-2009 [3902x3] | I have probably new bug with Altme server - I can't connect to world. It even does not try to, as I can't see any outgoing packets to IP of my world on particular port (xyz:5402). AltME client says - xyz exists, but not-online. But - our worlds ARE online. When I go to altme.com/check.html, the world seem to be online, and the site also is able to connect to it. So I inspected TCP packets in Wireshark, and it states: "cmd: find data: ["xyz" 0 1.2.17.3.1 4811897].cmd: lookup data: inactive ." |
OK, sent official mail to altme.com feedback describing the issue ...
was contacted by Altme feedback .... wow, there's someone live :-)
amacleod 24-Oct-2009 [3905] | who's there? |
Brock 24-Oct-2009 [3906] | My guess, Carl's wife, Cindy. |
Pekr 25-Oct-2009 [3907] | Dunno - it was signed as Safeworld's technical support :-) The issue is still not resolved and I can't get to my worlds .... |
Graham 25-Oct-2009 [3908] | Strong argument for sticking with FOSS |
Gregg 26-Oct-2009 [3909] | There's an old issue I hit again recently, where new connections to the world can't be made, but existing sessions still work. Restarting the world from a shortcut doesn't work to solve it. You have to start AltME and choose 'Start a World'. |
Graham 26-Oct-2009 [3910] | Time to restart the OpenAltme project. |
BudzinskiC 31-Oct-2009 [3911] | Anyone else seen a trojan warning for AltMe pop up in their antiv virus software? Microsoft Security Essentials just told me that there's a virus in one of the AltMe chat files. Any idea how to see to which group the file belongs? The file is called 380.set. |
Sunanda 31-Oct-2009 [3912x2] | 380.set is the "Chat (Not web-public)" It is _unlikely_ to have a virus, as it is basically a text file consisting of REBOL blocks (you can load it into a text file to take a look) But who knows how clever virus writers are these days? Yes, I've seen some false positives with REBOL products before. |
If you look in the file: altme/worlds/rebol3/users.set you can see the group-id to titles mapping. Again, just a text file.
BudzinskiC 31-Oct-2009 [3914] | Yeah I'm sure it's just a false positive, I wasn't concerned or anything. I use Windows only for playing games, it doesn't have access to any important files and I use sandboxie for stuff I'm not sure about. Before MSE I used AntiVir and that one does report even more false positives, pretty annoying. Usually a company can contact anti virus software companies about these false positives in their products, do you know by any chance if that was done for REBOL in the past? And thanks for the info about the file/group mapping :) |
Maxim 1-Nov-2009 [3915] | rebol/sdk also returns a false positive on several virus checkers |
BrianH 1-Nov-2009 [3916x3] | The Jan-2008 R3 alpha shows up as a false positive in AVG, still. |
The MSE false positive for the chat set was for a javascript exploit. Were there any javascript discussions in that chat file?
If it is just a numeric mapping, it would be amusing if the numbers involved were also used in a javascript exploit :)
BudzinskiC 1-Nov-2009 [3919] | BrianH, I still got the chat file in the MSE quarantine, I'll take a look at it next time I boot into Windows and look if there's any javascript code in it. At the moment I don't use it that often since Windows 7 keeps rebooting every few hours and messes up my new harddrive, seems to be a common problem with Windows 7. And it worked so nice for a couple of days, meh. |
Graham 1-Nov-2009 [3920] | Heh .. there is a javascript channel here .. maybe someone posted some sample code? |
Pekr 11-Nov-2009 [3921x2] | damned - once again lost registration for my worlds. This is starting to become insane. It is at least 6th case in half a year. This service is becoming unreliable .... |
I contacted Carl privately, I think that someone should provide some explanation to what and why is happening there.
Brock 11-Nov-2009 [3923] | Reichart and team could not duplicate or explain. As I stated earlier, hosting only one world on the same system seemed to greatly reduce the occurences of this. I was never given any info on what was done to identify the problem, but I also didn't push for it. Maybe Reichart can add something on this? |
Pekr 11-Nov-2009 [3924x2] | I think he can't. Last I heard Altme is now fully handled by RT, hence Carl is probably the right person? :-) |
I would like to know the mechanisms, which checks for the 10 day time-out period, so that it could free timeouted worlds. There must be bug there. Both my worlds were running yesterday, I visit them on regular basis. So I wonder how some script or whatever sits at altme.com, can fail on check here?
amacleod 11-Nov-2009 [3926] | Lost my Worlds too... Pekr, Do you think that is the problem some bug in the 10 day use limit? If so, will subscribing the name stop this from happening? Does anyone here have ALtme "save" the world name for them and if so have they avoided this problem? |
