[!AltME] Discussion about AltME

I've seen this pretty often on the old server.

So I thought I will put an end to "your world has expired" nonsense
(which is technologically done in totally dumb way - your worlds
are running, and yet they expire, and it totally contradicts what
is communicated on the web - your world expires, if not used for
more than 10 days) ....

... but unfortunatelly, following registration link does not work
- http://www.altme.com/cgi-bin/orders/cart.r?cmd=buy&prod=100-1&

Good luck with the email ...

Please contact the server administrator, [root-:-localhost] and inform
them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have
done that may have caused the error.

Pekr, Lost my worlds too. First time since we thought we had figured
out the problem...

If you run your own AltME world that you start with a script or other
method, the AltME name server has been improved to keep your worldname
reserved as long as users login to your world a minimum of once every
ten days.
http://www.rebol.com/article/0463.html
So does this mean if you remain continuously connected you can lose
the name?

What we need is a way to search the group names instead of being
forced to scroll thru them ...

Disconnected now and got this message

Server reported error in unknown-request because of: fstatus

the f is italic

Quite odd. I was seeing altme problems today as well. Checked the
traceroute to discover the connection to this server was routing
from here in California, to NY, to Washington DC, then to Frankfurt
Germany... nice. This server is just south of Washington DC.
Tried to use AltME on Win7 today. Wow, don't try to share files.
What a horrible OS experience Win7 is, along the lines of "where
are my files?"
I've got to imagine this is a problem for R2 as well, no? Anyone
have a fix for the installer?

Put the files somewhere other than in the program files directory;
stop acting like a Win9x progeram.

Right now I have an issue with AltME not loading new messages after
the initial refresh after logging in.
And the activity line says "Chat: <groupname>" and sticks there instead
of saying "On-line". Refreshing requires logging out and back in.

Yes, I've looked a that a bit... it's a strange one.
I thought that TCP isn't allowed to drop packets, but it sure seems
to do so. Perhaps REBOL simply is not detecting that error condition.

Running two other worlds right now and no problems there.

A couple days ago, in one of our main worlds we use here, the checklists
did not sync.
So, I think the algorithm for sync verification must change. Right
now it's notification based, but I think it needs to reverify on
a regular basis. This wasn't a problem when TCP/IP was reliable.
But, I see dropped packets even in web browsers these days... often
leading to some strange looking pages (because for example, the CSS
never loaded.)

yes, I see the same thing. I recall there was a sudden drop a couple
of years ago in general speed and it has been like that since.

Is there a way to automate notifications for private groups? I will
not be visiting as much but want to get updates to certain groups
and thought about making some form of tool to do this. Was curious
if someone has already created one.
Would be cool if ALTME groups had a notification feature where it
could send something to an email box on each update to that group.
Actually this looks pretty simple to do but may require an instance
of altme running all the time
I wanted to avoid that.

I don't know of an existing tool, but it shouldn't be hard to do.

Interesting that for some reason AltME sees graphviz .dot files as
word documents in its file sharing.
I guess it's because .dot is also word document templates.

New participation index for the REBOL3 AltME world:
  http://www.rebol.org/aga-display-stats.r?world=r3wp&year=2010

The older prolific posters table simply counts total posts made....But
that's a little simplistic as some people post each sentence as a
separate post (understandable given some of AltME's connection issues)
while others post entire multi-line essays in one post.

The new participation index attempts to adjust for that by weightng
various things: total non-blank lines posted; total words posted;
etc.

It is still a fairly meaningless, though remarkably consistent measure
of the participation in the [web public] forums of this world.

Thanks to everyone who participates and keeps this place so alive
and friendly....And especially Graham, who is the top poster no matter
which way it is counted :)

So I have to use long words now??
Sunanda

[4550]
And lots of different ones ....repetitions are weighted downwards
too :)

(or lobby for some groups you are hyperactive in to become [web public]....that'll
have an immediate boost to your already high ratings :/

Please don't do that last one. Most of the groups that aren't web-public,
especially the hyperactive ones, are that way for a reason: privacy.
If you want to take your rants public there are other groups for
that.
Unless it's *your* group, a group dedicated to one of your own projects.
Then go for it :)

No problem Brian. there's a double-switch needed to make things [web
public] at REBOL.org....
Step 1 is for someone here to mark a group [web public]

Step 2 is for someone (usually me) at REBOl.org to flag that group
as on the publication list

So mistakes, or over enthusiastic [web public]ings can be corrected.

Hi. I read the FAQ and the Altme docs. How's one to find the last
posted messages since last login?
Do I have to go to each individual world of interest?
AdrianS

[4557x2]
no, nn gives you all the messages posted since the last nn across
all headers
sorry - didn't clue in you were asking about AltME - you can't see
the latest since the last login, but you can sort so that the groups
with the latest messages are at the top

Florin, on the left, you should see "M | Users | Status" You can
click on these:

M = Most recent
Users = Alphabetical
Status = By by status

Just a note, I had to reinstall Altme again because of computer failure.
And like the previous times I got the following note from my antivirus:
  Category: Trojan

Description: This program is dangerous and executes commands from
an attacker.

Recommendation: Remove this software immediately.

Microsoft Security Essentials detected programs that may compromise
your privacy or damage your computer. You can still access the files
that these programs use without removing them (not recommended).
To access these files, select the 'Allow' action and click 'Apply
actions'. If this option is not available, log on as administrator
or ask the local administrator for help.

not a big confidence builder to the inexperienced
I wish this would get cleaned up, it always gives me a bit of a fright
until I realize what's going on.
