Even using rebol on linux is annoying to me

The people in Syllable have also gone through this process. Eventually
we each decided that instead of spending all our time getting Linux
to work, we could also spend it building a complete new system

I gave up on Amiga a few years ago. maybe its back in new form. I'm
off to try the live cd.

Although Linux is relatively successful on servers (just not as successful
as its proponents want to believe), we have also introduced Syllable
Server this year, a Linux built in the same way as Syllable Desktop
to offer a complete network platform

Kaj, I never knew about the "Amiga-Syllable" Connection. I better
check it out again.

Contrary to popular opinion I've been a bit careful to hold back
on promotion, because Syllable is just a guest here
Syllable started out as a plan for an Amiga clone halfway the nineties.
Not much code had been written yet when it changed into a unique
OS. After a few rewrites, large parts of it were modeled on BeOS

Kaj, no one here would not know how much you are involved with Syllable
: ) kaj: "syllable " ... in my mind.

I thought the Syllable screenshot running a DOS emulator running
my Atari 8-bit emulator running a Boing ball demo in the Amiga group
here would be a giveaway :-)

Yeah, that's pretty obvious! I've been thinking about getting a PS3
to run as a linux box (for fun mostly as I do most of my work on
a XP PC). Personally I think there's potential in that marketplace
for a solid OS. Any thoughts?

Live cd would not boot
but I suspected there might be a problem as when I tried to download
it it had an htm extension which I removed to save as an iso extension
i'll try again

If you could burn it, it should have been an ISO. But there should
not be an .htm extension
Did you burn it as an ISO image, not as a data file?
You should at least get to the startup menu of the boot loader
After that you may have hardware support problems, but there are
several options to try in the boot menu
If you download the English live CD on Windows, the website says
that you should rightclick on it

yes as an iso...if you click the link it brings me to a web page
with jibberish on the screen as if its displaying binary data so
I saved and changed the name removing the htm.
Kaj

That most probably doesn't yield a proper CD ISO. It says to rightclick

It's not even refering to an HTML page. I get an .iso.bz2 extension
What operating system and browser are you using?

Syllable-0.6.4-LiveCD-1.1.iso.htm for the lower link
Syllable-0.6.4-LiveCD-1.1.iso.bz2.htm for the top link
xp and ie

James, we've been entertaining the thought of porting to PS3, but
it would be a lot of work. Realistically, we can only do it with
Syllable Server, our Linux, but that is not complete enough yet to
be meaningful on PS3

I tried burning it on another drive and using different software.
I'll be right back

If you download the top link, you should be launched into a BitTorrent
client if you have one installed
Are you sure that's what you get when you rightclick on the link
and choose Save or something equivalent?
amacleod
13-Dec-2007
[1385x3]
yes
I tried to boot on another computer but it seems that it is not bootable
I'll try torrent
Kaj

the iso was 6.8 megs

Kaj

That's the one. But it's a .bz2 file, compressed with BZip2
You should unpack if first. What extension does it get on your machine?
Our browser was always based on the KHTML engine from Konqueror on
KDE on Linux
Years later, Apple also used it for Safari, and in our latest version,
we have also changed to this improved WebKit engine
So the browser is unfinished like all of Syllable, but quite modern
And it's very fast and memory-friendly

Ok, I renamed it with the bz2 ext and used 7zip to decompress. Buring
now. will try again...

Maybe the bz2 extensions comes through if you don't remove the htm
extension, or maybe IE would have unpacked the file for you. IE is
weird with that
