[Syllable] The free desktop and server operating system family

Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1353] | Exactly |
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1354] | Even using rebol on linux is annoying to me |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1355] | The people in Syllable have also gone through this process. Eventually we each decided that instead of spending all our time getting Linux to work, we could also spend it building a complete new system |
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1356] | I gave up on Amiga a few years ago. maybe its back in new form. I'm off to try the live cd. |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1357] | Although Linux is relatively successful on servers (just not as successful as its proponents want to believe), we have also introduced Syllable Server this year, a Linux built in the same way as Syllable Desktop to offer a complete network platform |
james_nak 13-Dec-2007 [1358] | Kaj, I never knew about the "Amiga-Syllable" Connection. I better check it out again. |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1359x2] | Contrary to popular opinion I've been a bit careful to hold back on promotion, because Syllable is just a guest here |
Syllable started out as a plan for an Amiga clone halfway the nineties. Not much code had been written yet when it changed into a unique OS. After a few rewrites, large parts of it were modeled on BeOS
james_nak 13-Dec-2007 [1361] | Kaj, no one here would not know how much you are involved with Syllable : ) kaj: "syllable " ... in my mind. |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1362] | I thought the Syllable screenshot running a DOS emulator running my Atari 8-bit emulator running a Boing ball demo in the Amiga group here would be a giveaway :-) |
james_nak 13-Dec-2007 [1363] | Yeah, that's pretty obvious! I've been thinking about getting a PS3 to run as a linux box (for fun mostly as I do most of my work on a XP PC). Personally I think there's potential in that marketplace for a solid OS. Any thoughts? |
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1364x3] | Live cd would not boot |
but I suspected there might be a problem as when I tried to download it it had an htm extension which I removed to save as an iso extension
i'll try again | |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1367x5] | If you could burn it, it should have been an ISO. But there should not be an .htm extension |
Did you burn it as an ISO image, not as a data file?
You should at least get to the startup menu of the boot loader
After that you may have hardware support problems, but there are several options to try in the boot menu
If you download the English live CD on Windows, the website says that you should rightclick on it
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1372] | yes as an iso...if you click the link it brings me to a web page with jibberish on the screen as if its displaying binary data so I saved and changed the name removing the htm. |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1373] | That most probably doesn't yield a proper CD ISO. It says to rightclick |
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1374x2] | yes I right clicked and saved file without the htm extension. |
having trouble gettting hte vm version too
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1376x2] | It's not even refering to an HTML page. I get an .iso.bz2 extension |
What operating system and browser are you using?
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1378x3] | Syllable-0.6.4-LiveCD-1.1.iso.htm for the lower link |
Syllable-0.6.4-LiveCD-1.1.iso.bz2.htm for the top link
xp and ie | |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1381] | James, we've been entertaining the thought of porting to PS3, but it would be a lot of work. Realistically, we can only do it with Syllable Server, our Linux, but that is not complete enough yet to be meaningful on PS3 |
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1382] | I tried burning it on another drive and using different software. I'll be right back |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1383x2] | If you download the top link, you should be launched into a BitTorrent client if you have one installed |
Are you sure that's what you get when you rightclick on the link and choose Save or something equivalent?
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1385x3] | yes |
I tried to boot on another computer but it seems that it is not bootable
I'll try torrent | |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1388] | How big is the file that you get? |
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1389x3] | the iso was 6.8 megs |
torrent downloaded with the htm extension too
removed the .htm and bittorrent seems to be downloading it.
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1392] | It must be almost 40 MB |
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1393x2] | sorry>>>46.8 megs |
how is hte browser on syllable? that wasa always my beef with amiga.
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1395x6] | That's the one. But it's a .bz2 file, compressed with BZip2 |
You should unpack if first. What extension does it get on your machine?
Our browser was always based on the KHTML engine from Konqueror on KDE on Linux
Years later, Apple also used it for Safari, and in our latest version, we have also changed to this improved WebKit engine
So the browser is unfinished like all of Syllable, but quite modern
And it's very fast and memory-friendly
amacleod 13-Dec-2007 [1401] | Ok, I renamed it with the bz2 ext and used 7zip to decompress. Buring now. will try again... |
Kaj 13-Dec-2007 [1402] | Maybe the bz2 extensions comes through if you don't remove the htm extension, or maybe IE would have unpacked the file for you. IE is weird with that |
