/Install and then maybe deeper in a docs directory or something

ok I'll have a look. Is there a tree command of some sort that can
do the looking for me ?
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[386x10]
cd /Install
No tree command in the standard distribution
ls
to list the directory contents
d
or
dir
may also work
Or you can read it from the site:
http://syllable.sourceforge.net/docs/latest/install.txt

Ahh! I think I used the power button to reboot.

Don't!
Not on any operating system
Except maybe Coyotos...

It's alright, it's not my main machine.
But I won't do it again. I understand the caching.

It wouldn't have affected any other Oses on it, anyway, but it may
well have corrupted the Syllable installation
It has a journaling file system, but it's not a good start

(I was talking about what I tried last night.) I'm just reinstalling
now, anyway.
Kaj

[406]
OK

Ok, finished install, used 'r' to reboot, escaped into grub shell,
did root (hd0,0) and setup (hd0), that seemed to be successful.
Then I typed 'reboot', set my bios to boot from C only, and now it's
just sitting with
	GRUB _
and a blinking command prompt, but no interactivity possible.
Kaj

Were there any error messages during setup (hd0)?
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[410]
There were three with "(this is not fatal)" at the end.
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[411]
What were they?
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[412]
Doh.
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[413]
What program did you use to create the partition?
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[414x2]
Maybe I'll try that step again from the CD, hang on. Syllable installer
created the partition, I am pretty sure it did anyway (it was very
fast...)
It was a win98 FAT partition previously.
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[416]
Did you use Syllable to create the partition?
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[417]
Yes, from the Syllable Basic CD installer.
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[418]
With our graphical DiskManager?
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[419]
Yes.
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[420]
Then it's probably a known problem of DiskManager not leaving enough
space before the partition for the boot manager on some systems
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[421]
any workarounds ?
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[422x3]
It wasn't necessary to repartition because you could have used the
existing partition
To get a correct partition, make the partition again with Windows
or some other partitioning tool
Then in the Syllable installation, just point it to that partition.
It will just reformat it
Anton

[425]
Ok, first I am going to try go back and see what those error messages
were.
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[426]
DiskManager is for when you only have free space and need to make
a new partition
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[427]
ok, the grub setup (hd0) messages:
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/afs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[428]
So what were the warnings?
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[429x2]
Running "embed /boot/grub/afs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... failed (this is
not fatal)

Running "embed /boot/grub/afs_stage1_5 (hd0,0)"... failed (this is
not fatal)

Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) /boot/grub/stage2 p /boot/grub/menu.ls
"... succeeded
Done.
(getting very fit here, running between the rooms.)
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[431]
Yes, that's the lack of space that prevents the embedding in/completion
of the boot loader. Dunno why it calls it not fatal
Anton
14-Nov-2005
[432]
Ok, so I'll rumage around for a boot disk.
Kaj
14-Nov-2005
[433]
Getting even fitter :-)
