Pekr

is there live CD to try?
Kaj

[799x2]
Sure, for two years now, I think

don't you "fear" BeOS clones? hmm, actually I wonder, if work on
those continues or not. The most vital (or the only one?) seems to
be Haiku?
I will try it over weekend :-)

Yes, they're most like us. But they started many years after us,
actually looked at our code to see how it's done, and are still years
behind...
Excellent. Have fun!

thanks ... so you think Haiku is nowhere close to release?
Are those philosophies so different, that you can't e.g. merge?
Kaj

[807]
We're nowhere near 1.0, so Haiku certainly isn't. Despite their having
said otherwise as early as several years ago

will your announcement be published on your site after the conference?
:-)
Kaj

There are tow big differences. They're recreating BeOS R5, so they're
working on the past, while we have always designed the best system
for the future. The other is that we're GPL/LGPL. They chose to recreate
their own code because they chose the MIT license
So, they can't use our code, while we can use theirs when it fits
:-)
Yes, we will announce on our site and here, after the conference
in a week and a half

So, Syllable is a desktop OS ?
Any databases on it ?
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[814]
Graham - yes, I think it is a desktop ...

[815]
( it's in the title of this channel ! )

I expect it being posix compliant, so theoretically, ports of stuff
like that should not be a big problem ....
Graham

[817]
http://kamidake.other-space.com/is down
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[818]
what is that?
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[819x2]
We have ports of Berkeley DB and SQLite, so far
Yes, the Kamidake software repository is gone, sadly. And we still
have to clean up the links. Our own releases are on SourceForge,
though
Graham

No printing support yet
Kaj

[822x2]
We're quite POSIX compatible, but sadly, a lot of software assumes
Linux these days. Porting is relatively easy, but still an art -
or slavery, depending how you look at it :-)
Yes, we have printing since the last release, although it's still
buggy

[824]
So, what do real live users use it for ?
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[825]
they use it for fun, imo ....
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[826]
Developing Syllable :-)
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[827]
it is for those who like to look at new stuff ...
Graham
15-Jun-2007
[828]
what is the unique selling proposition?
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[829x2]
Yes, and basic browsing and email, listening music, watching video
What is your Unique Need? :-)
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[831]
Kaj - Graham is trying to find out, how it differs from "yet another
OS out there" ....
Graham
15-Jun-2007
[832]
USP = boots in 10 seconds...
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[833]
the same goes for languages, frameworks, we still can see new stuff
....
Graham
15-Jun-2007
[834]
but can't do much yet ...
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[835]
Many, many things. Some people care about one, others about another
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[836]
USP - boots in 3 sec woudl be better :-)
Kaj

[837]
What would you buy if you choose between Linux, 90 seconds, Vista,
60 seconds, Syllable, 6 seconds?
Graham
15-Jun-2007
[838]
DOS 2 seconds
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[839x2]
If Linux would have had our functionality in the first decade or
so, people would have been delighted with what you can do with it
So you still buy DOS these days? That's what I mean: different strokes
for different folks :-)
Graham

[841]
for me, I need a scriptable browser
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[842]
The reason that I'm always reluctant to answer this question is that
everyone wants to hear something else
Graham
15-Jun-2007
[843x3]
eg. chickenfoot in Firefox
printing .. eg ghostscript
and Rebol of course
Kaj

Events for our events system are being added to our browser. Never
had that question yet :-)
