well, today situation is a bit different than one year ago, as we
have less formal Carl's blog - so maybe Carl will blog a bit about
his presentation, not bothering to prepare some kind of official
press release kind of posts ...

Now that would be a problem, Petr :-)

Perhaps those of us who didn't go should have paid for one of us
to go as reporter.

at some point

Is GPRS too old these days?
Pekr
30-Sep-2005
[1254]
it is rather old, but still working. I have it with my notebook -
it is some 54kbit, the trouble is, it does not support compression
as general modem units, so 100KB html site is still 100KB

Reichart is on QTask..but dun think I see him here.

[mad rush to QTask]

today there is new standard here - EDGE - it can be nearly 150kbit,
should be enough even for SkyPe ..... it runs on top of GPRS modulation
or so, but device and mobile points have to support that, so only
big towns here currently ...

They are working on it. For some reason I can't get on AltME
==
in reply..to my question on whether there is a 'live' broadcast
Graham

R: Also, we have not started yet, but almost there.
They are blocking AltME in some way, but not HTM.

ahh.. the school's squid server
I'll betcha the problem is a proxy server.
yeksoon
30-Sep-2005
[1264]
is AltMe's message encrypted..?
Pekr
30-Sep-2005
[1265x2]
Squid? It is proxy, no? Or FW?
yes, it is encrypted ...
Graham
30-Sep-2005
[1267]
well, from experience I know that Altme doesn't like proxy servers
yeksoon
30-Sep-2005
[1268]
last year DevCon... Carl mention one of their lessons learnt from
IOS is that sometimes encrypted message may contain 'dirty characters'...that
can be rejected by proxy, firewall etc.

'dirty' = 'non approved words...
Graham

[1269x2]
and since they're at a school, they almost are certainly using a
free proxy like squid.
so, we can all blame Reichart !
Pekr
30-Sep-2005
[1271]
I would not do so, as Reichart is right now the only connection with
DevCon :-)

'k -- quick hack of an old app:
do http://www.ross-gill.com/r/rebcon-map.r
Or try 'where' on my rebsite...
I'd get it to do more, but it was a pig to get it to do this much...
Tomc

[1276]
ok what is it doing?
Chris

Just sharing coordinates. Type in your name, and click where you
are on the map.
It shows where we all are...
yeksoon

Chris

Yep, next stage would be to -- a) save your name and dot, b) show
a list of names, c) highlight the dot of the selected name, and d)
show their local time.

ok, so still not clear if the stream will work or not, I give up
too ... going to dress myself up and prepare to move to my work,
there I will be on AltME at least (but via GPRS, so no chance to
have enough throughput to watch the eventually running stream ...)
The stream was real fun for me last year ... I have my gfx card connected
to tv-out typed here on altme on the primary monitor, watching video
stream on TV ... it was cool ...
