I guess it is being replaced now by 3G.

so basically your cell-phone in PCMCIA slot, using packet based connection.
All three mobile operators provide it here. There is not even newer
standard, called EDGE, which runs upon that and allows speed up to
150kbit, which is nice for basically cell-phone connection ...

[1829]
what about edge ? doens't suposed to go about 48kbs ¿?
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1830]
3G is run on a long distance .... at least here ...

That does sound pretty good. I just use WiFi at home and the local
coffee shops.

EDGE is here already too, just your GSM stations have to support
that and here in CZ such are only in big towns yet ....
but even one single GPRS connection is very fine for things like
AltME and to obey firewall problems .... actually, I am writing now
from my notebook at my work, so via GPRS, otherwise our company uses
really strict firewall policies :-)

what about SMS ? could be easy to deliver text this whay ?
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1836x3]
SMS? Not sure - it is only some 160 chars ... not so reliable ....
costst money ...
I have really relatively cheap GPRS connection, unlimited data, 24/7
for some 40 USD ....
wherever I travell in CZ, and I can reach the signal of my GSM provider,
then I am on internet ....

streaming seems the better choice, i still dont know why this wasn't
possible at devcon
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1840]
yes, of course - thewere was problem with firewall at the place devcon
took place. But streaming does take large thougput - the thing is
- there was no single GPRS connection, so we not only missed streaming,
but we were basically cut-off of any info, untill Reichart/Jiame
managed connection for a short period of time or Reichart used QTask
to provide us with some info ...

you think, as far i know this whas just a pizza party in italy, we
work with computers, dont we ?

I will assume GPRS charges will be different once you travel overseas...with
global roamin account etc
Benjamin
3-Oct-2005
[1845x2]
yes GPRS is an expensive whay to do things.
Yek. if 30% of rebol comunity whas at DevCon, how many members do
you think rebol has ?
BrianW
3-Oct-2005
[1847]
17 ;-)

[1848]
within RT?
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1849]
GPRS is not expensive at all. Of course Roamed it is expensive, but
I assume at least one Itallian could have GPRS available :-)

[1851]
Benjamin - there were 30 ppl, not 30% :-) But even then, we are really
small imo ...
Benjamin
3-Oct-2005
[1852x2]
yes including RT
i did know it whas impossible, i just what to know some numbers
yeksoon

[1854x2]
I would think ...30-50 active (as defined by those whom you can see
on ML, AltMe, QTask etc).

there are those who dun participate as much... and that can bring
up to 100 or so...
I believe a huge portion of the French community have their own channels
to communicate
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1856]
still noone from DevCon here?
Benjamin
3-Oct-2005
[1857]
dont realy know why ... is 4Am here, so im not shure if im chatting

Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1859]
btw strange France has so large community and only DideC attended
the DevCon .... I thought that France and Italy are neighbour countries
:-)

Brian: <I think the lesson for next year would be "hold it someplace
where you know you can get to the outside world,">

The big issue is that its held where someone volunteered to host
it. That may not meet everyone's needs, but its unfair to knock a
volunteer for not doing something no one else volunteered for either.

One idea for next year......a non-attender volunteers to be info
officer.....They get the papers in advance, and publish them according
to the conference schedule. So at least the backbone is published
in sync....... Now, someone solve the interacive bits....But we now
really need a DevCon2006 group.
Pekr

[1863x3]
Sunanda - let's not just complicate things. If someone can't get
one single GPRS non-behind the firewall connection, than it is a
bit worrying :-)
Noone just knocks Gabriele for anything :-) In fact, if I think about
the devcon in Prague eventually, I alredy know it really will cost
a LOT of energy to spend. Gabriele did very good job, the troubles
just happen ...
Basically we are just sorry it happened ..... but maybe next year
it would be good to have slides for presentations before the conference.
With most conferences, it is requirement also ... otoh I can imagine
someone hacking his presentation few hours before the actual lesson
:-) We are all somehow pressed for the time :-)
Maarten

[1866]
OK, what do you want to know?
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1867]
everything :-)
Maarten

[1868]
COnference was good :-)\
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1869]
I posted my quick 10 questions, Reichart published them on QTask,
someone other posted another two ones ...
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1870]
Basically we saw: rich-text, BEER, rebcode, LNS.
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1871x2]
but I may ask them directly right now ....
so rebcode and rich text become natural part of View from now on?
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1873x2]
And on the application side: Canvas, the detective, qtask
Well, we saw them.
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1875]
who did demo of rebcode? Any actual examples of where could speed-up
be applied?
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1876]
And REBOL will try to grow by becoming a scripting language around
a communications product (Carl mentioned in his speech that in order
to grow orders of magnitude Rebol would need to reach users)
