Perhaps the wine wasn't good enough?

Brian: <I think the lesson for next year would be "hold it someplace
where you know you can get to the outside world,">

The big issue is that its held where someone volunteered to host
it. That may not meet everyone's needs, but its unfair to knock a
volunteer for not doing something no one else volunteered for either.

One idea for next year......a non-attender volunteers to be info
officer.....They get the papers in advance, and publish them according
to the conference schedule. So at least the backbone is published
in sync....... Now, someone solve the interacive bits....But we now
really need a DevCon2006 group.

Sunanda - let's not just complicate things. If someone can't get
one single GPRS non-behind the firewall connection, than it is a
bit worrying :-)
Noone just knocks Gabriele for anything :-) In fact, if I think about
the devcon in Prague eventually, I alredy know it really will cost
a LOT of energy to spend. Gabriele did very good job, the troubles
just happen ...
Basically we are just sorry it happened ..... but maybe next year
it would be good to have slides for presentations before the conference.
With most conferences, it is requirement also ... otoh I can imagine
someone hacking his presentation few hours before the actual lesson
:-) We are all somehow pressed for the time :-)

OK, what do you want to know?
Pekr

[1867]
everything :-)

COnference was good :-)\

I posted my quick 10 questions, Reichart published them on QTask,
someone other posted another two ones ...
Maarten

[1870]
Basically we saw: rich-text, BEER, rebcode, LNS.
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1871x2]
but I may ask them directly right now ....
so rebcode and rich text become natural part of View from now on?
Maarten

[1873x2]
And on the application side: Canvas, the detective, qtask
Well, we saw them.
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1875]
who did demo of rebcode? Any actual examples of where could speed-up
be applied?
Maarten

[1876x3]
And REBOL will try to grow by becoming a scripting language around
a communications product (Carl mentioned in his speech that in order
to grow orders of magnitude Rebol would need to reach users)
Cyphre did; he did rich-text and the last 30 secs of his presentation
he mentioned that doing it in rebcode sped things up a lot.
like 15-30 times, forgot the figure.
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1879]
ok - did Carl mentioned any concrete partnership? What is the communication
product? Such claims, as rasing x-fold in usage have to be backed
up somehow ... and was there mention of VitalNeeds? They don't mention
REBOL anywhere on their website anymore. Was the partnership lost?
Maarten

[1880x2]
The thing about devcon is not the presentations, but the dinners
and meetings in between; that's where a lot of things get discussed.
VitalNeeds: don't know.
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1882]
Of course, can imagine that :-)
Maarten

[1883]
Communications product: I think it is AltMe2/IOS-next gen.
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1884]
We also saw VID redesign mentioned - what was basically said in that
regards? It was also mentioned several times ... any concrete info
here?
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1885x2]
Why do you think we see rich-text and LNS? Because they are the foundations.
And rebcode is needed for media (speeding up code)
No concrete info; but *everybody* agreed it had to be changed or
redone'

Talk about rebol/Coop is here for quite some time. If it is that
- altme-ios mixtuer = coop, I wonder if any work was actually done
already? (except the fact that LNS are nearly ready to go ...)
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1888]
No, Coop is a way for RT to speed up rebol development with the
community.
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1889]
ah so ...
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1890]
Perhaps next year you should come yourself ;-)
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1891]
there was also mentioned the team grows - does it basically mean
that RT has some more ppl on contracts, will have them, or will even
employ some ppl as in the past? (Holger, Jeff)
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1892]
Don't know
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1893x2]
Maarten - that is typical answer and rather dishonest to those who
could not some. Smells like elite talk - we don't need it, really
;-)
some = come
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1895]
But honestly, I don't know. I know Gabriele is doing work, Cyphre
did, ....
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1896]
Your overall impression? Are you staying with Rebol? :-)
Maarten
3-Oct-2005
[1897x7]
Yes.
My impression is that it is time to bite the bullet: either the next
two years will be the big step forward or it is dead (community-wise).
I expect the first; there are simply getting more rebol based products
out that make people say "Wow!"
- Qtask
- Altme2
- SURFnet Detective
- Canvas/Dpaint
- Some of Ashley's stuff
- Jaime's wireless stuff
And then all the projects I can't remember
IT in general is at a dead-end. Rebol based products will break new
markets open.
And there are a lot of new features/libraries that will enable even
more rapid (=profitable) development.
To quote Reichart:
Phase1: Get underwear
Phase2: Never mind phase 2
Phase3: Profit

Maarten

rebGUI, BEER, ... rebCode, rich-text, LNS, ...
Gotta go now, later!
Pekr
3-Oct-2005
[1907]
ok, thnks ...
Graham

[1908x2]
I'd be interested in a comparison on how BEER implements LNS and
the official LNS.
But it certainly sounds as though much more was shown this year ..
whereas last year's stuff seems to have largely evapourated.
