Kaj 10-Jul-2007 [2507] | Eee would be a good target for Syllable. :-) There are several tiny machines coming out that can use a tiny operating system |
Jerry 12-Jul-2007 [2508] | The Curl Programming Language is FUN. http://www.curl.com/ |
Pekr 12-Jul-2007 [2509] | Slow, ask Robert .... |
Jerry 12-Jul-2007 [2510] | Slowness is not the biggest problem of Curl, but pricing is. Pricing for commercial deployments starts at $12,000. |
Henrik 12-Jul-2007 [2511] | useful for governments then. they have that kind of money. |
[unknown: 9] 12-Jul-2007 [2512] | Anytnig make Curl "Great?" |
Jerry 12-Jul-2007 [2513] | For writing a RIA research article, I've spent 10 hours studing Curl, that didn't make me an expert, but so far: 1. I like the content-centric programming, it's kind of like MakeDoc + RSP + RTF. 2. The macro facility seems powerful, which makes homemade DSL possible, I guess. 3. APIs seem complete. 4. The 2D and 3D rendering engine uses hardware-acceleration. 5. It's a Functional Language. 6. Unicode, Yes, even Curl supports Unicode. Like I said, I am not an expert, so any of the items listed above could be wrong. Here is a DDJ article http://www.ddj.com/dept/architect/184413224 |
Allen 12-Jul-2007 [2514x2] | It is a longtime since I tried it.. But I recall it had fantastic support for units (weights, measures, distance) and intelligent conversion between them . But I can't find a link to any docs that show this anymore |
doh!.. I should have looked at that article link first. ;-)
Jerry 12-Jul-2007 [2516] | The Curl doc is not in HTML/PDF formats. It's a Curl Applet itself. After downloading and Installing the Curl IDE, you'll have the Curl document, which is an applet, like I said. You can find some interesting 2D / 3D Curl applets in the curl.com web site. I am impressed by its 2D / 3D ability. |
Graham 12-Jul-2007 [2517x2] | The curl people spammed us a few years ago |
a lot of people on the rebol mailing list were spammed by them

Pekr 26-Jul-2007 [2520] | Pyro - FF extension for off-line apps - http://pyrodesktop.org/Main_Page |
Alan 26-Jul-2007 [2521] | re Pyro but is only for Linux at this time |
Pekr 3-Aug-2007 [2522x3] | Io language at Pixar - http://www.iolanguage.com/blog/blog.cgi |
hmm, reading that, one must wonder, why there are no REBOL fans in such companies ....
I hope R3 might change some attitude, yet I am still afraid, that the main reason (not understandable to me) for some folks is open-source. It is like cult.
Pekr 4-Aug-2007 [2525x2] | Hehe, I wonder how usable is the phone going to be :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR4ezMgRlWo&mode=related&search= |
http://www.openmoko.org/
Geomol 4-Aug-2007 [2527] | An OpenSource phone. Funny! And why not? It must come. This must be something for Reichart and others who ask for opensource. :-) |
RobertS 5-Aug-2007 [2528] | we should watch Rentrak in Portland, OR and deviantArt.com as they have people open to languages - and it is my impression there is much more Ruby and Python happening in Los Angeles ... of course Io lang will be fine because they have a good core community who chat daily (IRC) and becasue Steve ignores my suggestions ;-) |
Pekr 8-Aug-2007 [2529] | Motorola delivers first cell phone based upon Linux, with open development platform? - http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS8917567693.html |
[unknown: 10] 10-Aug-2007 [2530x4] | The openmoko interview is listed at the Chaos Computer club germany website... a coinsidence that you mention it btw... |
The problem with lots of cellphone based on "linux" is that linux is not accesable at all... with the openmoko project Linux is also the OS but is fully usable for programming... They use a OEM phone hardware frmo [FIC]..openmoko is is the OS on top of Linux and is fairly based on GTK... (which is a stupid choise...) But because everything need to be OPEN in the openmoko project they selected GTK. Also Hardware-specs are OPEN. The Phone is already working !!! test version where tested in March this year... development is strong going...
The funny thing about this project is that a time of opening their FORUM-Websote they had instatly 3000 registered users online ;-)
here is the openmoko interview (in German) -> http://chaosradio.ccc.de/
Henrik 10-Aug-2007 [2534] | http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20070810165237718 Finally, it's looking like SCO has lost their case against Novell. |
[unknown: 10] 11-Aug-2007 [2535] | .... this looks like the trial IBM versus Microsoft in the OS/2 cases... |
Pekr 13-Aug-2007 [2536x2] | QNXZone shuts down - http://www.qnxzone.com/.... this is what happens when company is bought by another one, which does not recognise the importance of community support. But maybe QNX is so good RTOS, that it can rely purely on its business customers ... |
OpenGL 3 announced - recent news on OSNews.com
Terry 14-Aug-2007 [2538] | http://builtwith.com/default.aspx?qtask.com |
Henrik 15-Aug-2007 [2539] | http://www.losethos.com/<--- now here is a weird little operating system. It looks quite bad actually, but I guess Rebol 3 would be in direct competition with this, if Wildman will be done for standard PCs. |
Sunanda 15-Aug-2007 [2540] | Terry, builtwith is not very accurate -- perhaps because it has no way on ascertaining the serverside environment. For example, it assesses REBOL.org as using PHP and javascript. REBOL.org uses no PHP at all -- I suspect builtwith is simply reporting one of the server into headers which names the version of PHP that the ISP provides. Similarly, REBOL.org has no javascript -- just an empty <script>...</script> tag to prevent FOUC in older browsers. |
Pekr 17-Aug-2007 [2541x5] | Adobe Air (formerly Apollo) - nice initial page video - http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/air/ |
has anyone tried it? Pity R3 was not here 5 years ago ....
http://labs.adobe.com/showcase/air/
Downloaded AIR package, some 9MB .exe. They seem to have their own UI, which is kinda nice - kind of Confabulator type of apps, but proportional sizes of UI elements are terrible - big buttons, small letters, etc.
and I don't understand it - they went one step back - they call it a "desktop integration" - basically they let their plug-in to run outside the browser, like we have with View installed for ages. They ask you, if you want to place "airlet" app icon on the desktop :-) I hope we beat them :-)
Terry 17-Aug-2007 [2546] | Check out Google Gears while you're at it. |
Pekr 20-Aug-2007 [2547x3] | It seems that Maxim Shemanarev (Author of AGG) now works for ScaleForm - http://www.scaleform.com.... |
But they seem to support OpenVG - http://www.khronos.org/openvg/ - so maybe they acquired Maxim, but not using AGG?
btw - openVG seems being HW accelerated, AGG is not (yet)
Henrik 20-Aug-2007 [2550] | http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=201801083&pgno=1&printable=true <--- 64-way CPU shipping. |
Rebolek 22-Aug-2007 [2551] | content aware image resizing - http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/66481/detail/ |
PatrickP61 22-Aug-2007 [2552] | That is so cool another link: http://www.merl.com/projects/mediaretargeting/ |
Geomol 23-Aug-2007 [2553] | Google do it again: http://earth.google.com/ Google Earth with Sky view. Very cool, I think! |
Tomc 23-Aug-2007 [2554] | alas it is earth or sky but not both |
