btiffin 14-Jan-2009 [3581] | People should just follow the Grateful Dead. Open Music (post Record Company Era) has been flourishing amongst the hippies for 40 years now. ;) |
[unknown: 5] 14-Jan-2009 [3582] | There already is open music. And glad to see that Youtube is addressing McCain's criticism's FINALLY. |
Allen 14-Jan-2009 [3583] | Again the music industry finds another way to keep lawyers employed. :-) It just means bands and labels who give permission are the tracks we will here & buy. So the restrictive ones miss out on being widely promoted. Similar thing happened here when music industry tried to get paid to play their promo-videos on tv |
[unknown: 5] 14-Jan-2009 [3584] | Their is so much other music from great artist that people can download for free. I don't know why people are fussing about certain artists getting their money. They contracted with record companies who are going to get most of the money but they will definately also reap more money as a result of this. Let them have their due. Breaking the law is breaking the law. |
Allen 14-Jan-2009 [3585] | If the artist got their money I'd be happy, the issue for me is most of it is going up the noses of the lawyers and pr people. At least itunes & emusic make it easy for independant bands to get distribution and money now. |
Chris 14-Jan-2009 [3586] | P: finally? Seems like a repudiation? |
[unknown: 5] 14-Jan-2009 [3587] | Sounds like they are getting with the program to me. |
btiffin 15-Jan-2009 [3588x2] | I once saw an interview with Allannah Myles. When her album Allanna Myles hit number 1 and Black Velvet was on every radio, she was worried she couldn't pay rent. She still owed 1.5 million on her "contract" and the label had already pocketed 5 million. We should always let sharks eat young keen artists. It's a fantastic system. Like the lottery. Sure, someone gets a million dollars every week. A |
hmm, altme is tweaking my ^S setting ... sorry. And society spends far more for the privilege. We should continue to support these systems whole heartedly. It's always great to give legal backing to the few that take advantage of the naive. Beautiful system, that should never be questioned, only revered and backed up with gun power and threats of jail.
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3590x2] | Artists will almost always choose to receive the free promotion. It's the publishers and labels who don |
't want to see it.. | |
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3592] | Sounds like Myles didn't have a lawyer and just blindly signed a contract. |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3593] | And that's not just the little guys who are trying to make it. I have several close friends who've sold tens of millions of albums who feel the same way without reservation. |
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3594] | I don't get it? What is the problem? Artist can give away their music if they want to. Why should they care of others don't want to? |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3595x2] | Having more people hear the music for free typically leads to more album sales. |
One of the best selling albums of the past few years was one that was given away freely.
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3597] | NickA, you need to tell the Record Labels this then for obviously they didn't know this and didn't do any research. You sound like you got it all figured out. |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3598x2] | I'm in the industry, and have been for 22 years. The reason the record companies don |
't want to see the industry going the way it's going is because it cuts out the need for their services all together.
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3600x3] | I wonder why Metallica doesn't get it then? |
Why do these musicians get awards at shows and thank their label?
Why do they use a label? | |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3603x3] | Anyone can produce a great sounding album on their home computer now. And if they can get famous without the record company support, they don |
't need the label. | |
Well many have become successful because of the backing of a label.
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3606] | This doesn't make sense Nick. |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3607x2] | Most who are big stars now, and up till now. |
but that's changing dramatically
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3609] | How do they get success from a label if your telling me that they sell more if they give away freely? |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3610x3] | The record company's industry has been torn apart, and anyone who has a vested interest in their business does not want to see this happen. |
Record companies used to make a huge return on their investments be making stars
They used to spend hundreds of thousands on making albums, and then millions on promoting and making a new star famous.
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3613] | Quite frankly I think people are just whiners and complainers and against the establishment. |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3614] | but they made it back many fold |
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3615] | Like the pipedream that linux will ever be more than Windows. |
btiffin 15-Jan-2009 [3616] | We're chatting in a News channel; this should move |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3617x2] | No , it's not whining, and it's nothing like that industry |
ok, in chat... | |
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3619] | That is actually ok. I didn't intend to get into a real discusson on this issue and I have resigned myself from the politics channels. |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3620] | ok, but if you're curious at any point, I can shed lots of light on this :) |
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3621] | thanks Nick. |
Steeve 15-Jan-2009 [3622x2] | A new company, created by a french reboler uses Rebol to develop its products. http://www.grey-soft.com/ |
(if i'm not wrong, it's FJouen here in Altme)
amacleod 15-Jan-2009 [3624] | I do not see a mention of renol on the website. And the products do not seem like something for which rebol would be used. |
BrianH 15-Jan-2009 [3625] | They have a REBOL logo on their About Us page. I think they would use REBOL for the client software that talks to their embedded devices. They do kiosks too. |
Steeve 15-Jan-2009 [3626x2] | Actually it is, FJouen clamed it himself, and he has showed us on the french BBS some work related to app clients dealing with external sensors. |
that's right Brian | |
Will 15-Jan-2009 [3628] | http://ftp.uni-kl.de/25C3/video_h264_720x576/25c3-2863-en-climate_change_-_state_of_the_science.mp4 |
Robert 16-Jan-2009 [3629x2] | SAP pays Sun to continue to support Java 1.4.2 because the Netweaver product needs it. That's crazy!! Companies spend millions using a technology platform that has such a high change/update rate, that it's impossible to catch-up with the own products. |
This shows the long Rebol release cycles in a complete new light...
