NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3603x3] | Anyone can produce a great sounding album on their home computer now. And if they can get famous without the record company support, they don |
't need the label. | |
Well many have become successful because of the backing of a label.
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3606] | This doesn't make sense Nick. |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3607x2] | Most who are big stars now, and up till now. |
but that's changing dramatically
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3609] | How do they get success from a label if your telling me that they sell more if they give away freely? |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3610x3] | The record company's industry has been torn apart, and anyone who has a vested interest in their business does not want to see this happen. |
Record companies used to make a huge return on their investments be making stars
They used to spend hundreds of thousands on making albums, and then millions on promoting and making a new star famous.
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3613] | Quite frankly I think people are just whiners and complainers and against the establishment. |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3614] | but they made it back many fold |
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3615] | Like the pipedream that linux will ever be more than Windows. |
btiffin 15-Jan-2009 [3616] | We're chatting in a News channel; this should move |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3617x2] | No , it's not whining, and it's nothing like that industry |
ok, in chat... | |
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3619] | That is actually ok. I didn't intend to get into a real discusson on this issue and I have resigned myself from the politics channels. |
NickA 15-Jan-2009 [3620] | ok, but if you're curious at any point, I can shed lots of light on this :) |
[unknown: 5] 15-Jan-2009 [3621] | thanks Nick. |
Steeve 15-Jan-2009 [3622x2] | A new company, created by a french reboler uses Rebol to develop its products. http://www.grey-soft.com/ |
(if i'm not wrong, it's FJouen here in Altme)
amacleod 15-Jan-2009 [3624] | I do not see a mention of renol on the website. And the products do not seem like something for which rebol would be used. |
BrianH 15-Jan-2009 [3625] | They have a REBOL logo on their About Us page. I think they would use REBOL for the client software that talks to their embedded devices. They do kiosks too. |
Steeve 15-Jan-2009 [3626x2] | Actually it is, FJouen clamed it himself, and he has showed us on the french BBS some work related to app clients dealing with external sensors. |
that's right Brian | |

Robert 16-Jan-2009 [3629x2] | SAP pays Sun to continue to support Java 1.4.2 because the Netweaver product needs it. That's crazy!! Companies spend millions using a technology platform that has such a high change/update rate, that it's impossible to catch-up with the own products. |
This shows the long Rebol release cycles in a complete new light...
Henrik 16-Jan-2009 [3631] | Robert, and it will be entertaining. Lean back and grab some popcorn (condolences to those that are stuck in it). :-) |
Reichart 23-Jan-2009 [3632x2] | Former National Security Agency analyst Russell Tice, who helped expose the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping in December 2005, has now come forward with even more startling allegations. Tice told MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann on Wednesday that the programs that spied on Americans were not only much broader than previously acknowledged but specifically targeted journalists. … The National Security Agency had access to all Americans’ communications — faxes, phone calls, and their computer communications,” Tice claimed. “It didn’t matter whether you were in Kansas, in the middle of the country, and you never made foreign communications at all. They monitored all communications. |

Graham 23-Jan-2009 [3634] | That include AltME?? |

Graham 23-Jan-2009 [3636] | There was a stink recently here when it was discovered the police had placed someone inside greenpeace! I don't think we're quite ready to monitor all communications. |

Pekr 27-Jan-2009 [3638] | Apple scam continues - granted patent for multitouch (now Tom Cruise should sue them). So - another prove that Apple pricks are worse than MS and not worth buying single product from - http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PTXT&s1=multi-touch&s2=multitouch&OS=multi-touch+AND+multitouch&RS=multi-touch+AND+multitouch |
Reichart 27-Jan-2009 [3639] | Not exactly. This is not quite as bad as it looks at first. It is not for multitouch, it is for a specific gesture. This patent will not hold up, but it was easy to file. It is also a broad claim specefically about how to scale with two or more fingers (not how to do general stuff with two or more fingers). For example, this patent would not stop you from: - Making a multitouch piano (you could play chords) - Using two fingers to press and zoom. - Using all your fingers to to make the page move around etc. If you hate one patent, you have to hate all patents. |
btiffin 27-Jan-2009 [3640] | The patent I still want to see expire is text caret/mouse cursor proximity. Hide the mouse cursor when the text caret is close and save people from a little RSI and increase some keyboarding productivity. Why Apple gets to claim that and a judge hasn't struck it down for health reasons is beyond me. It's not like it isn't non-obvious either. SNARL GNASH BARK AT MOON. ;) |
Reichart 27-Jan-2009 [3641] | It is not that a Judge as not struck it down (unless you know of a case), but it might be that no one wants to fight with Apple, even if they think they are going to win. A patent is the right to fight, not the right to win. |
Pekr 28-Jan-2009 [3642x2] | Reichart - you know, when Jobs returned to Apple, I thought that cool things are going to happen. And those things happened and Apple is real inovator. But then the company is starting to do "strange" things. I know they are trying to defend their know-how, their business. But some actions should be weighted. E.g. their limitation of OS-X apps on iPhone, now this patent. More and more developers are upset. And I think that they might loose more than actually gain. E.g. this one patent issue, when you read osnews.com comments, those comments are very negative for Apple. |
Besides that, I am not sure they were really first? Is it called a "prior act" or something like that? Look e.g. at www.perceptivepixel.com - it was here before iphone ...
Reichart 28-Jan-2009 [3644] | I'm a little confused by your view of this, Apple has been filing about 1 patent every week since they started! And, developers are not who thier market is. You are looking for "Prior art", and you will need to prove that. |
Pekr 28-Jan-2009 [3645] | So are you saying, that only target group is consumers? I thought that you also need satisfied group of developers. It will be interesting to see, how it clashes with www.gesturetek.com for example ... |
Will 28-Jan-2009 [3646] | why are you bashing apple? you can get great hardware from them, os is free you can install anything opensource on it, on the iphone any apple developer working for apple on the iphone has it jailbroken, they could stop cydia et all today, they don't.. there is this feeling lately that they are getting the new M$, my thought is they are just trying to protect their business from big dogs doing 0 innovations. Tell me one thing, what would be a world without apple? everybody will be using winoze 95.5.123 ... |
Pekr 28-Jan-2009 [3647] | Will - and you are typical fan boy, sorry. |
Will 28-Jan-2009 [3648x2] | at least, on my mac I can work, all my friends on m$ spend their time updating this and that, disussic about the best antivirus, antispyware, anti.. anti-getting work done! |
I'm big fan of Steve Jobs, yes!
Pekr 28-Jan-2009 [3650] | Please get your facts traight. Apple = mainly USA. Before iPhone, there was 0.x% penetration of Apple computers here in CZ. I was very long in amiga community, to know what is healthy community factor, what is zealotry, and what is plain fanatism. When I can see ppl going crazy about one-company-boss keynote, applauding things like adding icon here or there (because not everytime there is some real news worth of such event), sane person has to say him/herself - WTF? :-) |
Will 28-Jan-2009 [3651] | see what Gil Amelio & co ahve done in 2 years without Steve? |
Pekr 28-Jan-2009 [3652] | I am not downplaying what Apple did. They are maybe the only real innovator in last few years ... starting with ipods, continuing with other "i"s .... But - that does not mean I don't follow company policy. Corporate scene sucks sometimes, but I always openly say, what I don't like. Guys at Microsoft CZ know it, but - we are both sides open - some things can't be changed easily, some things can be changed. And some Apple's actions don't read well on some developer's books. |
