I don't think renaming REBOL itself is a good idea. However not mentioning 
the name in products powered by REBOL, might be a good idea.

If a new version of REBOL is very different from what we know as 
REBOL today, then it might be ok with a name-change. If it's just 
a new version in a line of versions of REBOL coming from Carl, then 
I think, it would be more confusing to rename it. And what's the 
point of a rename? The name is not the reason, the language is not 
more widespread.

somehow, I've always found that rebol sounded boyish.

and IMHO zen is a very appropriate name for the language itself. 
 but I agree that in web searches it would be quite hard to find 
stuff... which is extremely easy today with  REBOL.

That's why the typo-names are popular (like Google).

Google was an unintentional typo of googol.

zen script is already used by a vertical market company in dtp to 
web services.

zen script would be a very cool name  IMHO  :-D

REBOL sounds boyish because its a bad typo of Rebel.

I think changing the name is going to severely add confusion to what 
it is that Carl is trying to sell people/developers. 

For one, it's not likely to help getting old REBOLers back in the 
fold. We would have to waste a large amount of time explaining the 
relationship between REBOL and <whatever name>. Probably much more 
than we realize.


REBOL 2 and REBOL 3 are understandable immediately in the same sense 
that PHP4 and PHP5 are.


What would happen if Microsoft renamed DirectX or if Javascript changed 
to a new name? Confusion. Nothing more.

Erlang sounds technical and boring, but is OK. IDL sounds like the 
government made it.

it really gives out the impression that you are out to "teach people 
a lesson" and very few people in an ego filled space like programming 
responds well to that.

The word Rebel is boyish - the typo just sounds like it came from 
a tech company (everyone does it).

Forth is so named because in 1968 "[t]he file holding the interpreter 
was labeled FOURTH, for 4th (next) generation software Ñ but the 
IBM 1130 operating system restricted file names to 5 characters."

try telling you sysadmin that you know better than him.... and watch 
your account space be reduce by 50%.... if he had a bad day make 
that 1byte more than its current size  ;-)

Programming is a boyish field - Peter Pan style, keeping your creativity 
and edge by never getting old.

I'd prefer it being REALLY blunt... then its funny.... maybe we could 
rename REBOL to "Fanboy"  ;-D

The perceived problem with the name REBOL, is that it's very over 
exposed. Count the number of times you see REBOL, REBOL, REBOL, REBOL 
in capitals from the time you download R2 to the time you are fiddling 
around in the Viewtop. Too much exposure of the name. But it's because 
Carl is proud of the name. Tone it down for R3 and we'll be fine.


Some people think REBOL is a derivative of ALGOL or COBOL, but that's 
a separate issue.

Javascript has the same problem with Java.

If Carl wanna change it, it would be interesting to know, what motive 
he has for changing it.

Carl never liked the name... it was imposed to him by the marketing 
dept when he was still a startup. IIRC

Really? I don't get that impression in conversations with him. (We've 
talked alot about being rebellious and using camouflage colors)

Maxim - where do you come up with such info that Carl is open to 
renaming REBOL? I can't see anything like that floating around ... 
the REBOL rename is total nonsense and anyone claiming otherwise 
should take some marketing pills ...

If it is true, I might be out from this community. This is really 
totally non-professional aproach. REBOL's problems lay completly 
elsewhere, not  in the name itself. If Carl can't see it, noone can 
help the situation ...
