[!REBOL3-OLD1]
older newer | first last |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17584] | REBOL sounds boyish because its a bad typo of Rebel. |
Henrik 15-Sep-2009 [17585] | I think changing the name is going to severely add confusion to what it is that Carl is trying to sell people/developers. For one, it's not likely to help getting old REBOLers back in the fold. We would have to waste a large amount of time explaining the relationship between REBOL and <whatever name>. Probably much more than we realize. REBOL 2 and REBOL 3 are understandable immediately in the same sense that PHP4 and PHP5 are. What would happen if Microsoft renamed DirectX or if Javascript changed to a new name? Confusion. Nothing more. |
BrianH 15-Sep-2009 [17586] | Erlang sounds technical and boring, but is OK. IDL sounds like the government made it. |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17587] | it really gives out the impression that you are out to "teach people a lesson" and very few people in an ego filled space like programming responds well to that. |
BrianH 15-Sep-2009 [17588] | The word Rebel is boyish - the typo just sounds like it came from a tech company (everyone does it). |
Geomol 15-Sep-2009 [17589] | Forth is so named because in 1968 "[t]he file holding the interpreter was labeled FOURTH, for 4th (next) generation software Ñ but the IBM 1130 operating system restricted file names to 5 characters." :-) |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17590] | try telling you sysadmin that you know better than him.... and watch your account space be reduce by 50%.... if he had a bad day make that 1byte more than its current size ;-) |
BrianH 15-Sep-2009 [17591] | Programming is a boyish field - Peter Pan style, keeping your creativity and edge by never getting old. |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17592x2] | I'd prefer it being REALLY blunt... then its funny.... maybe we could rename REBOL to "Fanboy" ;-D |
pekr would be our king ;-)
Henrik 15-Sep-2009 [17594x2] | The perceived problem with the name REBOL, is that it's very over exposed. Count the number of times you see REBOL, REBOL, REBOL, REBOL in capitals from the time you download R2 to the time you are fiddling around in the Viewtop. Too much exposure of the name. But it's because Carl is proud of the name. Tone it down for R3 and we'll be fine. Some people think REBOL is a derivative of ALGOL or COBOL, but that's a separate issue. |
Javascript has the same problem with Java.
Geomol 15-Sep-2009 [17596] | If Carl wanna change it, it would be interesting to know, what motive he has for changing it. |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17597x2] | Carl never liked the name... it was imposed to him by the marketing dept when he was still a startup. IIRC |
in the days when RT was actually a company with 30 employees
Henrik 15-Sep-2009 [17599] | Really? I don't get that impression in conversations with him. (We've talked alot about being rebellious and using camouflage colors) |
BrianH 15-Sep-2009 [17600] | Heard a great line, don't remember from where: "Java has as much to do with JavaScript as Ham has to do with Hamster" |
Henrik 15-Sep-2009 [17601] | :-) |
BrianH 15-Sep-2009 [17602] | (paraphrased) |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17603] | :-D |
Geomol 15-Sep-2009 [17604x3] | It's kinda strange, they got along with calling it JavaScript. I would think, Sun would be able to stop it somehow. |
Should we try make DirectXScript? ;-)
Of course it should have nothing to do with DirectX, but be the link between iPhone apps and Amiga ... or something.
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17607] | call it DirectScript :-) |
BrianH 15-Sep-2009 [17608] | Can ActiveScripting languages call DirectX? I would think so... |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17609] | sanskript in relation to zen ? :-) |
Geomol 15-Sep-2009 [17610x2] | :-) |
Dharma | |
amacleod 15-Sep-2009 [17612] | Call it R as in R3...we'll always know what it means.... It worked for C and there was also an E script language on the Amiga |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17613] | it already exists... its a statistical language |
Henrik 15-Sep-2009 [17614] | ARR, then. Pirate language. |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17615] | hahaha that would really sit in well with MIS... hahaha "looks guys... we've got a process called pirate.exe"... think its a hacker? response... No ... he'd be too stupid to use a name like that! ;-) |
Sunanda 15-Sep-2009 [17616] | Then name it after a real (and/or legendary) pirate.....drumroll.....Alvilda http://towim.denmasters.com/rp/alvilda/pirate.htm (Contorted acronym available later) |
Pekr 15-Sep-2009 [17617] | Maxim - where do you come up with such info that Carl is open to renaming REBOL? I can't see anything like that floating around ... the REBOL rename is total nonsense and anyone claiming otherwise should take some marketing pills ... |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17618x2] | REBOL-SIG altme group... mid-august |
doh... I meant REBOL-SIG Qtask project
Pekr 15-Sep-2009 [17620x3] | REBOL being written in capital is another nonsense spread by many ... |
If it is true, I might be out from this community. This is really totally non-professional aproach. REBOL's problems lay completly elsewhere, not in the name itself. If Carl can't see it, noone can help the situation ...
Why do we come up with new names? Just search the blogs. Search R3-alpha altme group. Carl always teases community with similar topic, then I put some effort into collecting all possible names, post it several time to him ... just to see NO SIGLE response or decision ... this is really tiresome ...
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17623] | not saying its a priority Pekr. REBOL's name is something that has plagued it since its inception. It doesn't look cool, many don't even know how to pronounce it, and to top it off, the capital letters is total non-sense I agree too. |
BrianH 15-Sep-2009 [17624] | Carl is aware of the other problems, but that doesn't mean we should ignore the marketing situation. Still, I like the name REBOL. |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17625] | Its Carl which is adamant about it being spelled in uppercase. |
Pekr 15-Sep-2009 [17626x2] | No, it was always RT's marketing mistakes, which plagues it from the very beginning. The world was open and tried to look at what is REBOL about back then ... |
If you want to know what happens after the reaname, just ask me - completly nothing ...
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17628] | I would love we write is without caps. its much less aggressive... maybe a big part of the tiresome nature of the name and even its association to COBOL and others is just because of that. |
BrianH 15-Sep-2009 [17629] | Rebol then? I tend to use R2 and R3 in conversation with people who know we are talking about Rebol... |
Pekr 15-Sep-2009 [17630x2] | CIO which can't read REBOL instead of COBOL is not CIO, but an idiot :-) Young ppl, potentially new users, even hardly know, what the COBOL is ... |
Of course the name might matter, but I would like us to not think it will cure our marketing problems?
Henrik 15-Sep-2009 [17632] | I consider it to be a weakness of decisive capability, if your product changes name, because you've found something better. What does that not tell you about the language, if you change the name? |
Maxim 15-Sep-2009 [17633] | no one said it will *fix* marketing. Its just something that feels like a splinter once you start using it. |
