Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9554x2] | How are people coping with Carl's chat client ? |
Seems hard for us oldies with only bare text to work with .. no graphical clues
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9556] | It would help with a better console. I've also proposed to adopt a traditional LS/DIR, CD .. command set. I think that would click much easier for us. |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9557x2] | Luckily Jerry is not posting in Chinese yet! |
Yeah ... I keep wanting to type cd, ls etc
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9559] | yes, same here. |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9560] | and cat |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9561] | btiffin also finds the behavior of H to be wrong and I agree. It will quickly degrade into huge lists. Just imagine 20 more users. |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9562] | If you're going to look like a console, at least let's use console familiar tool names |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9563] | yes, I agree. |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9564x2] | Anyway it's too much cognitive loading for me! |
Is the server code available?
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9566x3] | I love the speed of typing numbers. I don't want that to go away. |
not yet. | |
btw, I've mentioned it before, but try to run rebdev in multiple consoles. much more powerful.
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9569x2] | I saw you post that ... |
all in the same directory?
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9571] | meaning? |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9572x2] | each console accesses the same data files? |
msg-db.r etc | |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9574] | yes, they do. I don't think that's harmful. I haven't noticed any discrepancies. |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9575] | probably because you're only in one console at a time! |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9576] | For a GUI version to do this, one could open N windows in the same RebDev script. I would love to see that. |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9577x2] | is there a http or gui client ? |
do we have to trace the http to figure out what's going on?
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9579] | no GUI client, only read-only mobile client. |
Pekr 15-Jan-2009 [9580x2] | I agree with btiifin, that 'tags for numbers would be nice. It would be nice to have e.g. R3 heading tagged as R3, and refer to it as R3 instead of the need to remember the number. I think that once GUI is available, this point will be moot. But I agree to provide some directory navigation like functionality. |
So far it still esapes me, how such system is going to be usefull, if not linked to CureCode comments (BrianH proposed something here), not linked to DevBase, etc.
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9582] | there is "b" to go up |
Pekr 15-Jan-2009 [9583] | 'b as 'back. I wanted .., or cd .. :-) |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9584x2] | sure ... |
Well, it all seems pretty primitive at present
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9586] | Pekr, we are not yet using bots or tags. Bots will be extremely powerful. |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9587] | I have to spend more time not less to see what's new... |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9588] | A GUI client will certainly help usability, but since we have console, we can use it over SSH and that's a great thing. |
kib2 15-Jan-2009 [9589] | Hi. Henrik, thanks for your answer on Carl's blog. |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9590] | kib2, it's unfortunate there is confusion. releasing software should be simple, but it's not. |
Pekr 15-Jan-2009 [9591] | Can we use it via SSH? Hmm, interesting .... |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9592] | SSH ?? |
Pekr 15-Jan-2009 [9593] | Well, it is more flexible than Altme and Carl wanted to be some prototype start of new Altme. It has real threading, tagging, ranking, private messaging, is spriptable. So good so far. But - we also need read-only groups, private groups, or other app schema over it. |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9594] | pekr, when we get an R3 for real operating systems, of course. |
Graham 15-Jan-2009 [9595] | So, I use my cellphone to ssh to another box so that I can then run the chat?? |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9596] | Graham, yes, just like you can SSH to a linux box and use Rebol/Core through that already now. |
kib2 15-Jan-2009 [9597] | for sure! Just a newbie question: as I've to wait for R3, is there a way to have a descent font rendering on Windows (antialiased) ? Ugly courier fonts really annoying for working/ reading AltMe messages. |
Pekr 15-Jan-2009 [9598x2] | Gabriele - read my comment above, please. Those 3 namead are prominent App servers, not webservers. Your team should really think to implement some file options ... |
ah, wrong group ... sorry ..
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9600] | kib2, not for AltME. REBOL/View (which AltME is based on) is hardwired to non-antialiased fonts in its View engine. |
kib2 15-Jan-2009 [9601] | Henrik : so I really have to wait for R3! |
Henrik 15-Jan-2009 [9602x2] | kib2, yes and I hate to say it again, but: R3 also solves this problem. :-) It's quite amazing how many times I've said that now. |
Graham, the console client is also because Carl uses SSH quite a lot in different locations, which is why he started with a console client instead of a GUI one.
