Installing X and everything on top manually is a cherished exercise 
on the way to enlightenment :-)

I did such installation several times, manually configuring everything, 
last time was in 1997. An OS requiring me to do that in 2011 is a 
joke.

(2002), then we switched to Debian and latter Ubuntu.

That's disappointing; I would have expected it to be better

But that happens with operating systems once you try them...

The DHCP option worked fine with FreeBSD.

Sounds very Linux: you need DHCP and X, and you have one distro that 
does DHCP, and another that does X :-/

on getting rid of /View instead. ;-)
