Question: Move the REBOL List?
[1/22] from: carl:rebol at: 10-Oct-2000 18:23
Dear REBOL list readers:
It's great to have so much activity happening with REBOL these days. Unfortunately,
our servers are overloading. We're starting to have gigabyte days. While it is good
to have all this activity, it is making life difficult for a few folks around here. What
would you think if we were to move this main list to a site like egroups.com? That would
also give you web access to archives, file lists, and other features.
Your thoughts?

Wouldn't bother me much. I'm already on egroups for a couple of other lists. (Though
they do append those annoying ads...at least they stopped pasting them at the start
of messages...)

Gigabytes days? I didn't know we were >that< active. ;^)

I don't mind eGroups, as I am on a few lists there already.
They do have some advantages, such as archives, doing polls,
and digests, as you mentioned.

That would probably be best and it would let people focus on their main jobs. I have
never used egroups but I know topica is fairly nice and has all the features that people
would want.

Carl-
So long as the list continues to send e-mail to the eScribe archive, I'm all
for it (smart search engine there.)
Also, is there any way you can make all past messages available in some kind
of package? I could then update the eScribe archive with messages before July
2000.

That would be good. For the archive, Scott mentioned that it is so large now that it
does not fit on a CD-ROM. Perhaps if we compressed it? Scott?

Please move the list to egroups! I find myself interested in only
a few of the messages on the list since I do not know REBOL well enough to
get a lot of the messages. It would be really nice to get a digest and
egroups offers that. I use a bunch of egroups lists and they are very
good.

Hello:
It would be great if a way were found to index ... normalize
etc. the archive into a formal database. After all, this list is
a tremendous asset.

I would also prefer it on egroups. Wasn't there a list already created by the name "rebol"?
If not, who is going to create it and create/maintain list?

I tried creating one earlier today after I read Carl's message, but I got an
error message from eGroups, that seemed to indicate the name was already
taken.

That sounds good to me. You get my vote. But it would be nice to have the name REBOL
as the newsgroup name. Perhaps you could find out who took this name and see if he/she
might give it up for this newsgroup?? Otherwise, what shall we call this discussion group?
How about:
REBOLTALK
REBOLUSERS
REBOL/Users
Or, if you can use brackets in name, try:
[REBOL] ; I kind of like this one. It would also work when you search for the word "rebol"
blah blah blah...etc...etc...

I suspect Rebol Crew have it. Here's the description that eGroups here
http://www.egroups.com/group/rebol
has about it:
<Quote>
[rebol--lists--rebol--com] is a remote list.
Message archive by month:
No messages for this group.
Members: 6
Addresses:
Post message: [rebol--lists--rebol--com]
</Quote>
There's no archive and it was:
Founded November 11, 1998
I've subscribed and unsubscribed to it. And I've just now subscribed to it
again.

I like the following:
[Rebol-Core--egroups--com]
[Rebol-View--egroups--com]
[Rebol-Command--egroups--com]
[Rebol-Express--egroups--com]
[Rebol-Apache--egroups--com]
It's seems very clear to me and can be easily expanded to cover other
products that Rebol-Crew will produce in future.
Opinions?

I also tried emailing to it but got this back from eGroups:

The rebol group is for archival use only and does
not accept direct postings. If you want to post to the
actual email list, please send your message to

Great idea, Carl
You guys at RT should not waste your precious time bothering with a list
when we have eGroups.com.
Let's move. I'm pretty sure everyone in here will like it!

I would prefer a main-rebol newsgroup.
(comp.lang.rebol)
So we would have archive and web-functionality through
dejanews. Furthermore newsgroups are IMHO better to handle
with this daily amount of posts.

How come, that the archive won't fit a CD-ROM ?
I have archived all the messages to the REBOL list since -97
(the core/alpha days), and during 2000, I have received anything
between 500 and 1400 messages per month..
The lists have existed about three years now, which will allow about
18MB of mails per month to fill up a CD.. 18MB and 1500 messages gives
an average mail size of 12k (assuming that the list received 1500
messages a month in November -97)...
As I can see from the yet unsorted 1704 messages during September and
October, the REBOL list's average message size is about 2-3k, which is
also true for the Ally list (which have received about 2200 mails since
middle of February)
Back in the time when it was possible to get digests of the messages,
the maximum size of the 100-message mail I got was 330k.

If this is all you want, egroups would be the better choice
because their system is much better than what deja provides for
newsgroups. Also, creating a new comp newsgroup will undoubtedly take
months. Even if we were to go through the procedure for creating the
group, there is no gauruntee it would pass. Moving to egroups will be the
best short term solution. If we want to create a newsgroup as well, that
would be okay.
