Lindows...

Hi,
Disclaimer: I am not a Lindows employee, nor paid by Lindows to advertise.
I just thought that some of you on the list would like to see a review from
an actual user of Lindows...
Has anyone used Lindows (www.lindows.com) yet? I just ran REBOL/View from
Lindows SPX for the first time, and was incredibly impressed when the text
came up crystal clear from the start! Just thought that some of you who
would like to use Linux, but can't quite walk away from some of your Windows
apps might like to know that someone is looking to provide transparent
Windows emulation inside of Linux. ]
Lindows, from the founder of MP3.com is based on the Xandros distrobution of
Linux, and is Debian based. It is probably the easiest version of Linux to
install. Lindows has a long way to go before it is a complete product. I
have only successfully installed a few programs. It seems that they are
trying to emulate windows 3.x so it is limited, but I believe they are
working on it...
Enjoy!!
Ammon
PS, In case you can't tell by my previous posts, I have even fully configured
my email client yet...

For a $99 one-year fee? Nah, that's okay.

Their site doesn't explain much, but it just looks like Linux with
Wine to me. You get that with every distribution. :-)

Gabriele.

What I have understood, they have tried to make this emulation as invisible
as possible so that end user needs not to tweak Linux details to run those
windows softwares. So I consider it as a highly specialized distribution
for non-gurus..
Considering how much new Windoze costs (with all updates) , it might not be
a bad idea to try.

Hi,
;-) Lindows is pretty much Linux with Wine, but there are a few things about
it that make it attractive like the fact that it is built on top of Xandros,
which is the (IMHO) best distro ever, but "pure" Xandros is not yet
available... It is also preconfigured to run your windows apps automatically
with Wine. As I said before, Wine is an attempt to emulate Windows 3.x so it
is basically a joke! I will personally be suprised to see 10% of all windows
apps actually run functionally on Lindows.
Enjoy!!

Hi,
Not a one-year fee, that is only for access to the Click-N-Run(tm)
where(?)house. Which is just a fancy front end to apt-get, the heart of the
Debian Distro. You will still be able to do complete upgrades after a year,
just not of any of the custom Lindows apps. ;-)
Enjoy!!

Actually this just needs including a proper Wine configuration or
configurator. Just to give an example, I tried running WinZip from
my rather standard RedHat 7.2 configuration after setting up
Wine's config file, and it succesfully ran, even placing an icon
on GNOME's desktop (exactly like it does on Windows).
So again, I don't see it as something that shaking... but this
does not mean they will not succeed: they are actually marketing
it, while no one is doing it in the same area (i.e. neither RedHat
nor Mandrake are saying that their Linux distros are in any way
compatible with some Windows software, at least not in such big
letters :), and they are probably contributing to Wine's source to
make it run more and more applications...
Regards,
Gabriele.
