[DEV] Introduction
[1/2] from: g::santilli::tiscalinet::it at: 13-Jan-2002 15:35
Hello everyone,
since challenges don't seem to work <g>, :) I've got another
idea for the REBOL community.
I've been thinking about the weak points of my contributions (such
as dbms.r and PDF Maker):
- incomplete/poor documentation;
- messy code (when I'm in a hurry... :);
- slow/intermittent development;
and I've been thinking about a way to work around those bugs. ;)
The idea is to involve the community a bit in the development of
such "contributions". I'll be using this list to do so, at least
in the beginning.
Basically, I want to try doing the development on the list instead
of "privately". This means that the people who are interested in
those developments will be able to follow the entire process of
development, thus to better understand the code and to be able to
participate if they want to.
To do so, I'll have to change the way I program; I don't know if
this will really work, but I'm going to try. The goal is to let
the reader understand every step of the process of thinking that
leads to the final code --- well, at least in part. :) If this
comes out to create too much traffic for this list, I'll choose a
different medium/method.
What I hope to get from the community:
- interested people will be able to understand and immediately
use the code; this means they might want to write
howtos/tutorials/documentation for such code so that the whole
community can benefit;
- more eyes on the code means less bugs and more
ideas/solutions.
What could be the benefits for the community:
- there's the remote chance that someone might learn from my
work; :)
- the solutions will be immediately usable for the people
interested, instead of sitting on some server unused or on my hd
used by me only;
- people will be able to immediately fix bugs or add needed
functionality, without having to wait for me to find free time.
Since there's some code I'll need in the next month, and that
could be usefult to others too, I'll start immediately this
process in the next message. I'll mark this kind of messages with
[DEV] so that people will be able to filter them out if they are
not interested. I plan to write 1 message per day or less.
Regards,
Gabriele.

Hi Gabriele,
I am using your dbms.r for month to store photo names. I'll be glad to help
for testing, building some example (as I already did in the past when I was
trying dbms.r for the first time.), making a few suggestion ( for example a
more secure way to delete a record ), helping a bit for the documentation
(FAQ, howto).
