Population of PDA Users
[1/19] from: gmassar:dreamsoft at: 7-Apr-2001 11:21
Hi folks,
I am curious how many PDA users are in the list and what country they
live. I, for one, own a EPOC-based PDA (Psion 7) and live in US.
Hope many of you would reply. This would give us some idea how much
percentages in population among the PDA users.
Thanks for replying.

Hi Geo,
Consider me a PDA-Geek,
I've had :
Nec MP400, HP 620LX, Nino 300, PsionS5 (shameless plug : check
http://www.palmtime.com for some nice games/utilities for EPOC)
I currently own :
HP 680LX, Casio E-125, Handspring Prism
I used to write for Team Palmtops, a french magazine about palmtop computer.
I've did PDA development for the company I work for and I'm currently
exploring Rebol as a way to develop small utilities as a scripting language.
I'm sure Rebol would be a great pda language : it's fast, the runtime is
small, it's multiplatform and it does a lot of things with less lines that
I'm used to ;) From an idea in the subway, to the coding on the pda right
away, and to further develop the script on my desktop is really neat. It's
become a way for me to test things out when I'm on the road ! The fact it
has some OOP support let me try things and see if they would work either
under Rebol or another language. Strangely, it's implemented faster under
Rebol ;)
btw, I live in Quebec, Canada !

A very satisfied Palm user from Italy.
Too bad REBOL doesn't work on Palm :-(, it'd be the IT consultant's
paradise to me.
I'm seriously considering to buy a Jornada just to use /Link on it...

I could not function without my Handspring Prism. I just wish there was a
version of REBOL for it.

Palm III.
[8/19] from: rebol:programmer at: 7-Apr-2001 19:27
I use a PalmIIIxe here... And currently program for it in assembler...
I wish I could use Rebol on it, but there is a good reason why rebol has not
been ported to PalmOS: palmOS does not allow apps to use much RAM as heap
space (less than 32k as I recall). Rebol normally uses a few megs I think.
It would be theoritically possible to do a Rebol port, but it would be
VERY slow (due to page swapping between the heap and storage RAM, and the
fact that the Palm only has the equivelent of a 68020 processor)

I use an HP 620LX and have been running the 2.2.0.15.1 version since
it was released. I find it invaluable for trying out ideas on the road,
train or plane. I just wish that version 2.5 would work for me. It would
also be great as I've mentioned before if there was a version of Rebol/View

Colin,
Did you get my message on which I said it worked on HP 680 ? so AFAIK, it
should work on HP 620

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the info, I get a "Fatal Application Error" as soon
as I try to run the 2.5 exe. Thse pop-up window states the following:-
Program: rebol.exe
Exception: 0xc0000005
Address: 00000000
I have downloaded the correct version (core151.zip) more than once!!

I live in Chicago, IL and have an HP Jornada 820. Most
of my friends have Palms and Visors, as does my mother.
They have more than 60 Jornada 820s at my father's work
- he is another REBOL user.

You may be out of luck for the moment. /View has yet to
be ported to WinCE. There are some architectural factors
that make even /Core a bit memory-hungry by standards of
WinCE programming languages - these should be resolved
before /View would really fly. But then, watch out :)
If you want to get a Jornada for REBOL, I would suggest
the 720. I like the 820, but you will much appreciate the
720's extra RAM and more updated OS and software. It has
the speed of the iPaq (alas, not the flash ROM), but you
will really like the increased battery life and keyboard,
particularly for programming on the machine.
If you really want to buy handhelds for /Link you might
consider getting an Agenda VR3 or some other Linux rig.
It would be a lot easier for RT to get /Link running on
something like that. Not that I don't want you pushing
for /View and /Link to run on Jornadas like mine :)

Hi,
I'm a Handspring Visor user and I'm living in France.
Why isn't Rebol able to run on my PDA ;-(((
[18/19] from: ryanc:iesco-dms at: 10-Apr-2001 14:53
Palms, thus Handsprings, are very limited. Though they tought 8 MB these
days, they only have 32K of fast RAM available for programs. The memory
to which they refer operates slowly and is intended for program storage
and records. You can still use this memory as you do RAM, but it is much
slower. I am sure REBOL could work on the Palm, but it would crawl in
comparison to other ports. To further deter, they likely would have to do
extensive porting, since the Palm OS seems so much different than other
operating systems that I know.
Keep in mind that the Palm was originally designed to be a robust handheld
organizer. I think, and many would agree, that they are overdue for a new
OS and hardware archetecture to meet developers increasing desires.
I hope REBOL would reconsider there decision not to support the Palm, but
I can understand their decision not to do so.
Maybe a cut down, compileable?, REBOL like language, for cell phones and
PDA's? A REBOL PDA dialect? Carl could probably write it in a weekend.
: )
Till then I will keep on using Satellite Forms, which I am skepticle is
more productive than C since I spend sooooo much time dealing with thier
interpeter's bugs. For now I can only hope Carl gets a PDA itch,

soon that View will become available for these
operating systems...especially Qnx.
