REBOL/Zine
[1/36] from: jeff::rebol::net at: 7-Jun-2001 20:38
Anyone want to join the REBOL/Zine?
The REBOL/Zine is a simple cron job type mailing list that
just sends out a weekly batch of articles to subscribers.
It will be weekly. The articles will be about email length
covering simple cool things you can do with REBOL. That's
all there really is to it. The format is really open,
though. People could even include poetry about REBOL, I
suppose.
T'was a man, Carl his name,
Uttered REBOL of endless fame!
Built the core, command and view,
REBOL/SELECT/SKIP/NEXT/DO
Ha ha. Fun stuff-- you know a basic simple zine where
people send in their articles to a mailing address, someone
gives them a quick eye over and then hits go, and the
articles are all REBOL processed into a nice neat
REBOL/Zine. Of course, one module spits out a nice new
REBOL/Zine web page archiving the previous. Keep it very
simple. I'd like to get it started if people were willing
to help contribute articles.
Articles should be things like: "Hey here's how you do X!"
kind of thing, or "Hey did you know you can do: X??" or
"This is a neat trick I discovered", etc.. Editorial's okay.
You can also submit articles about how you want people to
join your open source REBOL project etc, etc. Whatever-- an
open forum. The only censorship will be a matter of
readabilty, relevance to the community, limiting spam, that
sort of thing. Also, if you'd like to write a REBOL article
in your native (non-english) tongue, please do. We can
always worry about translations latter. Besides, REBOL code
is REBOL code, so we should all be able to understand that.
I'd like to write an article or two and if you'd like to as
well, please send me an email. After the ball gets rolling
and there's enough material for a first issue we can post
some way for people to subscribe and set up the web page--
but simple things first, let's write some articles.. "let's"
meaning all you gurus out there! Let's put some of this
brain power to a fun and productive use!!

That's a great idea. :) Who knows, maybe one day it'll get published. I'd
buy it before "Yahoo Life".

Excellent ! I think there is a enormous potential of writers on this mailing
list, but all the written stuff is spread over different web site...
Bringing it all together should give the community lot of learning material
;-))

Hi Jeff,
instead of joining to "Yes, excelent, go for it" kind of email replies,
I would like to suggest to at least think about following:
- we currently have some sites which would deserve more support -
rebol.org and rebolforces.com. I think that at least one of them could
become kind of portal for Rebols around the world (look at
http://www.qnxstart.com for example). It would require nice graphics and
some mechanism. Should be based upon Rebol of course - not like perl
based RT's website search engine ;-)
... your Rebol/Zine could become part of them .... and why? Because
Rebol needs to have public presence/interface, while e-mail list is kind
of hidden world ...
.. just a suggestion, nothing more ...
Cheers,

Okay, simple subscription page has been set up for the
REBOL/Zine:
http://www.rebol.org/zine.html
Once you enter your mail it will send you an authorization
code. Return to the site, enter it and you will then have
joined the subscription to the REBOL/Zine. [You can also
unsubscribe there as well]
If you have any problems with the subscription engine or
encouter any bugs, please email me with lots of yelling,
screaming and freaking out. :-)

Here's an idea for the first edition... an insiders look at Rebol HQ...
photos, bios that sort of thing. Same for some of the guru's wouldn't hurt
either.

I had the same thoughts, though more along the lines of "it's already
been tried". The trouble is I think that programmers tend to
approach writing articles in much the same way as they approach
writing docs for their programs. Need I say more? (:
The difference with a mailing list like this though is that they're
usually asking questions or responding to discussions started by
those questions. That they do respond to questions though shows the
way forward, I think. Someone needs to ask programmer X to write
article Y about subject Z, else it probably won't get written.

Hi, Jeff,
As, usual, I've got to throw in my usual disclaimer that I may not know what I'm
talking about. With that said:
Using a two step sign-up would seem to preclude the need to do a dns check.
After all, bogus email addresses will never be authorized, but valid email
addresses that don't return a response through dns will fail.
Just my two cents, and I've already lost one of them.

Exactly. I used to write monthly articles for an online mag, and the
problem I had was actually thinking of something to talk about. In
a slow month I'd be trying to come up with something interesting even
on the day before the deadline.
Maybe there should be a "theme", or a number of themes, to each issue,
and the next issue's themes are advertised at the end of the current
issue. Say something like:
Next Issue: CGI techniques
- POST or GET? What are they and how do I process them?
- Baking and eating cookies: pitfalls and possibilities
- Useful tricks for debugging CGI scripts
That way people can worry about the solutions, rather than thinking up
the problems as well ;) Just my 2p...
/me goes to subscribe to the /zine list...

BTW - I didn't mean that this is all that should be in the issues, only
that some theme should be pre-determined to help developers. If somone
finds a neat trick or useful technique then that could be added as a
additional articles
thingie?
Just my slightly frazled brain kicking in there... (never try running 5
distance learning courses as the same time, eesh...)

REBOL/Zine idea is cool. I'll contribute.
Here's my first suggestion too:
Restate the Zine contribution address with every
email. I had to roll back through email to find
it. :\
And, remind us busy folk that don't read every single
email: how do we subscribe to the zine?

Yep. That's absolutely mandatory, Papa REBOL! :-)

Okay, in the interests of keeping things simple contributions
go:
[rebolzine--yahoo--com]
You can also send them to me at my rebol account, in the
meantime, but the above address will be the "official" zine
emailing address.
People should know that the contributions can be short as
well.. [Martin--Middleton--speechworks--com] just wrote a message
to the mailing list about using the REBOL plugin with Opera
browser. This short little piece is a good example of the
kinds of things the Zine could include. These things
certainly good on the mailinglist, but of course, they are
mixed in with lots of other threads. In the Zine, the trick
and tip ratio should be really high.
Speaking of which-- I may occasionally add in the zine quotes
from different posts from the mailing list traffic which show
those kinds of tricks and what not, if no one minds. I'll
alert the author(s) when I do.

I don't see you in there. You can just DO the email that
you get back from the bot and that should take care of it.
Umm.. in either case, I'm just going to go ahead and move
anyone in the unauthenticated file over into the
authenticated before the presses roll and we'll sort it all
out later. The subscribe bot needs to be fixed up a little,
but we just needed something quick to get going in the
meatime-- a quick night-hack. 58 subscribers so far... :-)
If anyone has any problems with the brain dead subscriber
bot, just drop me a line and I'll make sure you get added to
the list!

It is so cool, that my typical "improve" kind of response has to appear :-)
I think that it a little bit shave if there is no link to rebol e-zines, so
here my questions follow:
- I can see e-zine has some structure. What about using make-spec (or
make-doc) to generate .html?
- or even VID inteface, allowing rebol code to become hot=clickable=runnable
directly from e-zine?
- maybe it is even worth (as I can see qualiy of articles is pretty high),
that RT would add it into its website developer section?
I hope others will second at least my last point. Rebol website has already
FAQ section, e-zine exists, so work is done. It is worth adding to website
even in its current text form. It is even worth the mention on main site.
It is so cool ... ah, I already said it? Well, after walking thru Jeff's
rooms and house my brains somehow lives in some strange kind of recursion
;-)
Cheers,

You bet, that's REBOL-arcanumI meaning "a word intended to be
glaring and distracting". Caution should be used around all
REBOL Puzzels to avoid becoming totally distracted by its
glaringness resulting in the loss of control of your vehicle.
